Shira & Elad Surrogacy Journey After Cancer

This was supposed to be our honeymoon phase. We just got married. We were planning to have children. But it all came crashing down when we heard those 3 words. “you have cancer”.

My name is Elad and I'm Shira’s husband. On our wedding day I promised Shira that I would give her the world, and that promise is now being tested.

Shira was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma shortly after our wedding last summer. She was only 29 and otherwise healthy. She hadn’t even graduated from college. We hadn't started our lives together.

Things happened very quickly once diagnosed. Within a span of 3 days, we met with a plastic surgeon, an oncologist, and fertility specialists. We began IVF treatments immediately. No one was able to assure us that we would have the ability to start our family.

Once the IVF cycles were completed Shira underwent surgery to remove the 4 cm tumor from her breast and a biopsy of her lymph nodes was taken. The surgery was successful but the biopsy results showed that some cancer cells were found in her lymph nodes. The pathology report showed that the cancer cells were dividing very quickly.

As a result of the aggressive nature of the cancer, the doctors urged Shira to start with the most aggressive treatment plan - 8 rounds of chemotherapy, 30 sessions of radiation therapy and hormone therapy for 10 years.

My brave wife took it like a champ, all while managing to finish her last semester at FIT and graduate with a BA in Interior Design with honors.

The reality we are facing is that pregnancy while undergoing hormone treatment is not an option. The only chance of having children and building our dream of having a family is through surrogacy.

Our entire savings has already been used for Shira’s treatment. Surrogacy is expensive, with the average costs estimated upwards of $80 -$85K.

I promised Shira the world and the world was to have included our children.

קוראים לי אלעד ואני בעלה של שירה. ביום החתונה שלנו הבטחתי לשירה שאני אתן לה את כל העולם והיום ההבטחה הזו עומדת במבחן.

שירה אובחנה כחולה בסרטן שד פולשני כחודשיים אחרי החתונה שלנו בקיץ שעבר, כשהיא רק בת 29 בריאה וללא מחלות רקע.

לאחר האבחון, הדברים קרו מהר מאוד. בתוך שלושה ימים נפגשנו עם מנתחת פלסטית, אונקולוגית ומומחה פוריות ועוד לפני שהיה לנו זמן לעכל את הסיטואציה, התחלנו שני סבבים של טיפולי פוריות עוד באותו הערב.

כשסבבי ההפריות הסתיימו, שירה עברה ניתוח להסרת הגידול בגודל 4 ס"מ ובלוטות הלימפה ובנוסף בדקו את בלוטות הלימפה להתפשטות של הסרטן. הניתוח היה מוצלח, אך תוצאות הביופסיה הראו כי חלק מתאי הסרטן נמצאו בבלוטות הלימפה והסרטן החל להתפשט. בנוסף, דו"ח הפתולוגיה הראה כי תאי הסרטן מתחלקים מהר מאוד.

כתוצאה מאופיו האגרסיבי של הסרטן, הרופאים דחקו בשירה להתחיל בתוכנית הטיפול האגרסיבית ביותר- 8 סבבי כימותרפיה, 30 טיפולי הקרנות וטיפול הורמונלי במשך 10 שנים שמונע משירה להכנס להריון בכוחות עצמה.

אשתי האמיצה עברה את זה בגבורה וכל זאת תוך כדי שהצליחה בזמן הטיפולים לסיים את הסמסטר האחרון וקבלת תואר ראשון בעיצוב פנים בהצטיינות.

המציאות שלנו כיום היא שהריון תוך כדי הטיפול ההורמונלי הוא לא אופציה, האופציה היחידה שיש לנו כרגע כדי שנוכל להביא את ילדינו לעולם ולהגשים את החלום של הקמת משפחה היא באמצעות הליך פונדקאות.

בעקבות העלויות הגבוהות של טיפולי הפוריות והסרטן בארה"ב, איננו יכולים לממן בעצמנו את הליך הפונדקאות כאשר העלות של התהליך נאמדת בכ 80-85 אלף דולר

הבטחתי לשירה את העולם ואני אעשה הכל כדי לקיים את ההבטחה שלי.
