I am raising funds to build and deliver my large-scale sculpture, 'Shadow Play,' for Burning Man 2026. This immersive installation pays tribute to the ancient art of puppetry and theatre, a tradition that dates back to 206 BC. The work utilizes pure geometric shapes and draws on the elemental qualities of the natural world. As sunlight travels across the Playa, it casts ever-changing patterns onto the desert landscape, transforming the structure into an interactive and expressive environment.
The sculpture is composed of 24 aluminum arcs, each representing an hour of the day. These arcs measure 100 feet in length and stand 15 feet tall, anchored securely in the ground. Arranged in a circular and expanding array, the arcs are accompanied by membrane fabric that is 3 feet wide. Together, these elements project dramatic shadows that constantly redefine and reshape the surrounding environment. The design allows the winds to move freely through the structure, and the overall dimensions of this 'theatre in the round' are 175 feet by 175 feet, providing ample space for burners to pass through comfortably.
Visitors entering 'Shadow Play' find themselves in a space that is always in motion, molded by the interplay of light, wind, and shadow. This evolving environment invokes a deep sense of awe and curiosity, inviting burners and their unique shadows to become part of the rhythmic transformation. Through such dynamic interaction, individuals are inspired to explore, reflect, and connect deeply with both the space and its captivating beauty—forming a genuine connection with the concept of 'Axis Mundi.'
Funds raised will help offset the material and transportation costs needed to build and deliver 'Shadow Play' to Burning Man. High quality materials for this build include aluminum, stainless steel cables, and duck cloth fabric membrane. Your support will help bring this vision to life and create a space for awe, curiosity, and connection at Burning Man 2026. Thank you for helping make 'Shadow Play' possible!
