Friends and Family- exciting news! Sofia auditioned and was selected to go to New York for a one week advanced, intensive program - studying acting and voice with industry professionals and Broadway actors. We promised her that if she got in-- she would have to do extensive fundraising --but we would make it happen. Sofia has since donated her savings, has played downtown on First Friday for tips and is giving a “Sofia & Friends Benefit Concert” on June 23rd in Santa Cruz. We hope that you can join us at the concert. But if you can't, you can still show your support here.
Sofia comes from a long line of musicians and singers. By age 2, she was reaching for the mic in her dad's hands. At age 6 Sofia auditioned and was selected to perform in KWAV’s Central Coast’s Got Talent showcase. Since then she has diligently been studying dance and musical theater. She has spent countless hours in the dance studio learning modern, contemporary, ballet, jazz, hip hop and African. She has been in 6 musical theater productions. Most memorable have been her performances as Ursula in “The Little Mermaid,” Gavroche in “Les Mis” and Little Red Riding Hood in “Into the Woods.” She has learned to play the trumpet, and has taken piano and guitar lessons. Sofia has also been practicing her craft by performing with her dad at community events and fundraisers, church, restaurants and coffeshops, First Friday Downtown Santa Cruz, live on the radio, and at her school Talent Shows. She was in her school choir this year, won several awards including “Most Inspirational” and was selected for the CCS Honor Choir. This is not a flash-in-the-pan for Sofia. It is her passion and her dream to pursue a career in performing arts.
Over the years Sofia has received so much encouragement - from strangers crying over her heartfelt performance, to folks saying that they expect to see her on Broadway or The Voice. They see her passion, her dedication and her raw talent.
And now, at age 12, Sofia has an opportunity to take her training to the next level. She says, “Performing makes me feel free and I love bringing joy to others. This training will help me get to the future I see.”
