Send Jendricks to university

Most of you know that Matt and I were travelling last year through much of the developing world.
Now we are raising money to sponsor Jendricks, a young woman we met in Kenya while volunteering, to go to university and study psychology.
I blogged several times about the poverty we saw while travelling. Most of the time it was overwhelming. People constantly asked us for money. We wanted to help but felt powerless and crippled by the endless need.
Then in Ethiopia we met a man from Oregon who was visiting Ethiopia for the second time. On his first trip, he met a couple of boys shining shoes in the streets and as he put it, “I got attached.” He visited their home, a hut with a dirt floor, and was moved by how little they had. When he got home he started to send them money every month. “It was not a huge sacrifice for me, but to them I knew it made a huge difference.” Back in Oregon people told him it was a scam and he was wasting his money. But convinced of their poverty, he decided to go back and see for himself how these two boys we’re doing. They now have a bed and an apartment with a concrete floor. He met their teacher who told him they used to be the worst students in class. Now they were some of the best. They no longer had to shine shoes in the street to earn money and survive. He introduced us to them. They were charming boys.
This man reminded me, you can’t change the whole world, but you can change it for one person.
Before we were in Ethiopia, we were in Kenya where we volunteered at a school called St Dorcas. Most of the kids here don’t have families.
This is where we met Jendricks.
When I met her, I knew I wanted to sponsor her.
Jendricks is a leader. She leads the school choir and cares for the younger kids. She wants to study psychology and give back to her community.
Jendricks has since graduated from St Dorcas where we volunteered. However, with no family and no way to support herself, she is continuing to live at St Dorcas where she volunteers.
Matt and I have a chance to change this young woman’s life and sponsor her to go to university.
However, we can’t do it alone.
Her diploma in psychology costs $3,500 AUD ($2,500 USD). This amount covers her tuition, exam fees and bus fare to get to and from class.
We are trying to raise the whole amount at once to give Jendricks certainty that she will be able to afford the whole course and finish her diploma.
If we raise enough money to ensure she can afford the whole course, she can enrol in January.
Many of you followed us around the world on our trip. Now, we invite you to help us make a difference to this young woman.
You can’t change the world, but you can change it for one person.
We would be so touched if you helped us sponsor Jendricks to follow her dream and study psychology.
