About the Competition 

We the People is a national competition sponsored by the Center for Civic Education. Each year, our students work in teams to develop a response to a series of Constitutional questions.  On the day of the competition, students answer their assigned questions and then respond to a series of follow-up questions by an expert panel of judges. This experience enables students to think critically and deeply about the Constitution, to collaborate with their peers, to develop oratory skills, and to gain a deep level of insight into complex and nuanced topics.  Every year, the judges provide an invaluable experience for the students helping them to recognize areas for growth while celebrating their knowledge as an accomplishment.



The We the People program goes beyond our curricular goals to help foster lifelong citizenship and civic values. We the People alumni are more likely to vote than their peers, with a 92% voting rate. Studies have shown that We the People alumni are more politically tolerant and exhibit less political cynicism than the average American. Through this experience, Henley students have gained Constitutional knowledge, a strong sense of civic values, and the ability to support an argument--all through the lens of a challenging competition. This year, our students placed first at both the regional and state competitions and we are hoping to participate in the national competition for the first time. To ensure that every student on our team has the opportunity to compete in this once in a lifetime experience, we are embarking on an extensive fundraising mission to help offset the costs.
