Saving Shanghai

Doação protegida
For those of you reading this that know us, thank you for your support over the years. For those of you that don't, thank you for taking the time to read this. Shanghai Mama's was established in 2000, and until a few days ago was run by one of Cincinnati's favorite people, Alex Chin. My opinion may or may not be biased based on the fact we are family, but everyone that knows him loves him. He's been a brilliant chef for 38 years, owning many restaurants over the course of that time. He spent years traveling the world to perfect his craft. Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia...he was there. He brought years of learning back here to Cincinnati, gaining customers who followed wherever he went next. We didn't see going somewhere new in our near future, and we're deeply saddened to have to share this news. The building we've been in for 20 years sold, and our doors are now closed. We've been recognized on the news, received various CityBeat awards, and have always helped our community.

Keeping a restaurant open mid pandemic was hard, but opening a brand new one, now that is difficult. It takes a lot of planning, time, and of course, financial resources. You may be wondering, how much time do we have? None. The doors are locked, and we unfortunately weren't able to give any warning. We wouldn't be reaching out on this platform if it wasn't an emergency. If a quarter of Cincinnati donated us one single dollar, we would be able to make this happen. We've found a new location, but it needs some serious work. As a family, we're doing everything we can on our own, but there's only so much we can do.

To open the new location, we would need around $150,000. Would we love if as a community you guys helped us reach that amount? You have no idea, but we know how difficult times are financially. We set our goal at $75,000 in hopes we can get a portion of the absolute necessities taken care of. If you donate, your name will be added to a list that is printed, framed, and hung in our new restaurant. We want people who walk through our new doors to know you helped us open them. We believe in our community, and the power of social media. If you are not able to donate, please share. Helping us share our story is just as valuable as a donation.

Thank you for taking your time to read this, and we can't wait to be back in business. We look forward to seeing you all again, and with time, we will. To all those affected by the pandemic, our hearts are with you. We will all make it through this, no matter what.

Because I enjoy bragging about Alex's accomplishments, here's a bit of his history...

From 1982 to 1985, China Kitchen on Ludlow Avenue.
From 1985 to 1989, Chin Dynasty on Vine Street.
From 1991 to 2016, Pacific Moon Cafe on Market Place.
From 2015-2017, Szechuan Garden on Dixie Highway.
From 2001 to 2020, Shanghai Mama's on 6th Street.
