Saving Princess Leia

Donación protegida
This is Princess Leia.  She is a Mini Bernadoodle.

We made arrangements to see Leia and determine whether or not she would be a good fit for our family.

Well, if there is such a thing as love at first sight, then this was it, it didn't take much convincing that she was to be the newest member of the Wilson Clan.

We drove home with our son Cooper holding on tightly to our newest family member, excited at the prospect of going home and getting to know his new puppy.

On our first night home Princess Leia was a bundle of boundless energy, zipping around the house and getting to know our other furry family members.

The next 3 days were spent with all of us remembering what it was like to have a puppy in the house and Leia getting to know the lay of the land.

Unfortunately, when Wednesday rolled around it had become quite apparent that something was not right with Princess Leia.

She had lost her appetite, her energy was all but sapped, and she was just not her usual playful self.

We had scheduled her first visit with the vet that day, so while we were at the vet's office getting her vaccinations, we had Leia examined as well.

Sadly, she was diagnosed with Parvo.  She stayed at the animal hospital for several days to be treated, but, it was during this time that it was discovered that she had something much worse.

Leia has a congenital defect called Portosystemic Shunt.  PS compromises the blood flow to the liver and the liver does not receive adequate blood, this in turn causes the liver to fail.

While she is young, we can support her by providing her with supplements, medication and a low protein diet.  However, in order to live a long and healthy life, she will need a very costly surgery.

One that, unfortunately, we cannot afford.  Leia's time in the animal hospital and the cost of testing was quite expensive and quite honestly it was an expense we were not expecting so soon after bringing Leia home.  We have taken care of the charges for Leia's care in the emergency animal hospital and we are now left to consider the surgery and the cost of everything that it will entail.  Basic surgery will cost $6000.00.

My hope is that my family, friends and animal lovers alike will open their hearts and help us give Leia a long and healthy life.

We will be forever grateful to any and all who read our story and decide that Leia is worth saving.
