Ten Years in the Making
When we launched our folk singing group ten years ago, we knew just one thing for certain: that we wanted to make music in celebration of our culture. We have grown significantly in the time since then, but our purpose remains the same. Keeping Caribbean folk singing alive in the tri-state area, we are ready to put another ten years of our lives into this vocation/mission – or as many years as are possible. Without these funds, though, we do not see any way forward.
Our Fundraising Goal
To cover expenses related to performer salaries, rehearsals, and performances, we are turning to you, our friends and fans. Our goal through this campaign is to raise $10,000, and every dollar helps. The Caribbean Community
There are beautiful cultures in the Caribbean, and it would be a horrible shame if any of them were to disappear in the coming decades. That is a real possibility, though. Unless we work together on projects like this one, there is no telling what tragedies could befall our people. Likewise, there is no telling what fun and value we could pass on to our children and our children's children by throwing ourselves into this fundraising effort wholeheartedly
Risks & Challenges
The way that we see it, there is much more risk inherent to missing our funding goal than there is to hitting it. Because we are already making music together and because we have racked up ten years of experience, we are confident that we will not bump into any big surprises. We pledge to keep our contributors updated regarding all the progress that we make, remaining transparent in the months and years ahead.

The Importance of Culture
All throughout history, people have connected with each other through the things and ideas that they have shared. Passing on these things and ideas to the next generation, each group of people creates a culture that is as distinctive as the personalities that compose it. This is a universal truth, one that you can examine – and one that anthropologists and historians commit their whole lives to researching and analyzing.
The thing about culture, though, is that it is fragile. Unless we are working to preserve it, it tends to disappear over time, disintegrating and losing its shape. We need to protect it from the sands of time, lest they wear it away into oblivion.
Our Daily Efforts
At Braata Productions, we work tirelessly day in and day out to preserve our Jamaican and Caribbean culture, in which we take tremendous pride. Our mission is to prevent our culture from dying so that more and more people can experience the music and the fun that have brought us joy throughout our lives. To do this, we have formed a folk singing group, and as you can imagine, this initiative takes up a lot of our time and resources. We spend hours upon hours practicing as a group and keeping our skills sharp, all in an effort to make our culture more accessible to people. This is a daily job, but we are happy to do it.
Here is the problem: because Braata Productions takes up so much time, we cannot reasonably treat it like a hobby. We need our group members to show up to practices instead of picking up other jobs, and to do that, we need to be able to pay fair salaries. As you can imagine, this has created difficulties for us.
Art as a Calling
In a real way, our plight is emblematic of a predicament in which many other artists and performers have found themselves. While people expect great art, they also expect artists and performers to get by with minimal compensation – as if hobbyists could ever produce the same quality as dedicated, full-time professionals. To those of us who view art as a calling, the solution is clear. We need to properly compensate the men and women who pursue art full-time.
Unless we are able to do this, we will have to shut down Braata Productions. Our gigs have not paid us enough to entice our singers to continue rehearsing and performing on a regular schedule, and as the cost of living in New York continues to rise, our challenges only become harsher.
