Save Plevna’s Century-Old Community Building
Donativo protegido
The little town of Plevna, Kansas, was devastated by a tornado that went through during the night on May 18. Along with destroying homes, the storm ripped the roof off of the century-old former school, which currently serves as the community building.
This charming red brick structure, built in 1938, is a historical landmark to many from surrounding areas and a symbol of the legacy that lives in Plevna. It was erected as an addition to the original school which was built in the adjacent lot in 1902. Past generations of many current residents attended school here. The Plevna school district dates back to 1881 when the first class met in a tiny one-room schoolhouse.
The community is now faced with a difficult decision. Plevna is tiny and does not carry insurance on its city buildings. A new roof alone could cost up to $80,000; there are broken windows to replace as well, and damages to the city office. Without a new roof, this piece of Kansas history will have to be torn down. Most residents are faced with their own homes that need repairs and are unable to contribute funds towards the necessary restoration.
If you are able to contribute towards saving this piece of history, the town of Plevna and the surrounding community would be so grateful.
This part of rural Kansas has rallied together in unbelievable ways already! We are so blessed to live in such a strong community that truly cares about each other.
