Ayúdanos a completar el rodaje de “SARGAZO: El documental”

Desde hace más de una década, en el Caribe vivimos algo que nunca habíamos visto: enormes mareas de sargazo llegando a la costa, cambiando el color del mar, el olor del viento y la vida de comunidades. No ocurre solo en México, también sucede en otras ciudades del Caribe y del mundo, en mayor o menor medida.

Este documental nace porque queremos contar esa historia desde otro lugar: no ver al sargazo como enemigo, sino como un mensajero, uno que revela tanto la fragilidad como la resiliencia de quienes vivimos cerca del mar. Nuestro enfoque mezcla ciencia, testimonios locales, imágenes submarinas únicas y la mirada de mujeres que han dedicado su vida al estudio y registro del océano.

Esta película surge de la colaboración entre dos mujeres locales profundamente ligadas al Caribe Mexicano: una cineasta y una bióloga, junto a un equipo técnico y creativo peninsular muy profesional. Ambas hemos crecido y trabajado en contacto directo con el mar, siendo testigos de cómo el sargazo ha transformado las costas, los paisajes y la vida de las comunidades que dependen de ellos. Para nosotras, este documental es un acto de amor por nuestro territorio y un gesto de resistencia frente a la pérdida de la relación con el mar.

En octubre presentamos un avance de la película en el 3rd EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum (en Bruselas), y las reacciones a nuestras imágenes confirmaron que vamos por el camino correcto: hay más gente que ve al sargazo como lo vemos nosotras, con respeto y cariño por el medio ambiente.

Por qué estamos haciendo este documental

Queremos mostrar el sargazo desde una narrativa más humana y más honesta. Hemos grabado en México, Belice y República Dominicana, y estamos listos para continuar en la Isla de Guadalupe y Europa, donde el fenómeno también deja una huella profunda. Europa, además, representa algo simbólico: es un lugar donde el sargazo del Caribe se importa, se estudia y se transforma en nuevas industrias; donde el panorama no es únicamente oscuro, sino también esperanzador.

Guadalupe, por su parte, muestra lo que ocurre cuando un territorio pequeño puede llegar a quedar incomunicado por las algas… y cómo, al pertenecer a Europa, puede permitirse poner letreros oficiales que advierten a la población que no es seguro entrar al mar cuando hay sargazo. Algo impensable (por ahora) en Cancún.

Por qué necesitamos tu ayuda

Hasta el momento hemos investigado, viajado, entrevistado y filmado con recursos propios y con el apoyo de gente valiosa y bondadosa que cree en el poder de esta historia. Ya llevamos el 40% del documental filmado y hemos logrado cubrir la mitad del financiamiento.

Cintia Landa Romo. Ciudad de México, 1984. Maestra en Ciencias por la Universidad de Colorado con más de 15 años de experiencia en proyectos de conservación ambiental a nivel nacional. Radica en Quintana Roo desde el 2015 en dónde ha colaborado con gobiernos, académicos, organizaciones de la sociedad civil y empresas privadas en proyectos para la conservación de los mares y costas del Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano comprendido entre México, Guatemala, Belice y Honduras.

Help Us Complete the Filming of SARGASSUM: The Documentary

For over a decade, the Caribbean has been experiencing something we had never seen before: massive tides of sargassum reaching the shore, changing the color of the sea, the smell of the wind, and the daily lives of entire communities. It is not only happening in Mexico—it is also affecting other places across the Caribbean and around the world, to varying degrees.

This documentary was born from a desire to tell that story from a different perspective: not seeing sargassum as an enemy, but as a messenger—one that reveals both the fragility and the resilience of those of us who live close to the sea. Our approach weaves together science, local testimonies, unique underwater footage, and the vision of women who have dedicated their lives to studying and documenting the ocean.

This film is the result of a collaboration between two local women deeply connected to the Mexican Caribbean: a filmmaker and a biologist, working alongside a highly professional technical and creative team from the Yucatán Peninsula. Both of us have grown up and worked in direct relationship with the sea, witnessing how sargassum has transformed the coastlines, the landscapes, and the lives of the communities that depend on them. For us, this documentary is an act of love for our territory and a gesture of resistance against the loss of our relationship with the sea.

In October, we presented an early cut of the film at the 3rd EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum in Brussels, and the audience’s reaction confirmed we are on the right path: there are many people who, like us, see sargassum with respect and care for the environment.

Why We Are Making This Documentary

We want to portray sargassum through a more human and honest narrative. We have filmed in Mexico, Belize, and the Dominican Republic, and we are ready to continue in Guadeloupe and Europe, where the phenomenon also leaves a deep mark. Europe, moreover, represents something symbolic: it is a place where Caribbean sargassum is imported, studied, and transformed into new industries—where the panorama is not only dark but also hopeful.

Guadeloupe, in turn, shows what happens when a small island can become cut off due to sargassum… and how, as part of Europe, it can afford to place official signs warning people that entering the sea during sargassum blooms is unsafe—a measure currently unimaginable in Cancún.

She has lived in Quintana Roo since 2015, where she has collaborated with governments, academics, civil society organizations, and private companies on projects for the conservation of the seas and coasts of the Mesoamerican Reef System across Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras.
