Rosemary Reyes Recovery Fund

Rosemary Reyes is an esteemed Los Angeles-area vocalist, and is considered the godmother of the fabled Cafe' Nela, Northeast LA's home for music. Rosemary had been long retired from a career in the television and motion picture industry when she ventured into the beloved cafe' in 2014. For the next five years, Rosemary could be found at Nela nearly every night the club was open, listening to music or holding court at the bottom of the hill.

Rosemary started writing music in 1974, and formed her first band in 1978. Tragically, her notebook of handwritten songs, dating from 74, was recently stolen. She has been eager to begin remembering and writing down her lyrics, not to mention getting back to the studio and on stage with her awesome band. However, she received some serious news about her health that would keep her from these soul stirring activities.

Rosemary has been having acute health issues for more than two years. In March 2019 she began feeling pain in her feet and knees, which made walking difficult. Rosemary saw a neurologist, heart surgeon, and sports medicine doctor, but none could find the source. Instead, her condition was written off as old age, and she was directed to a pain management specialist. During a visit to this doctor, he trained his stethoscope on her ankles, feet and neck, and due to her faint pulse, he suspected clogged arteries and referred her to a vascular surgeon. Rosemary subsequently learned that she has six clogged arteries that need to be cleared. Today she is one surgery down with five to go.

Rosemary lives on a tightly fixed income, and the benefits she receives are not sufficient to cover her considerable medical and after care expenses. Some of her needs, most paramount but not limited to, include rides to medical appointments and round the clock supervision due to her limited ability to walk and balance. The duration of these needs could be up to a year.

Additionally, Rosemary's home is in a state of disrepair, and desperately needs modifications to create a safe navigable environment. So, if you're handy with a hammer, paintbrush or rake, please consider giving in this way.

We need Rosemary to recover from these setbacks and to resume her life as soon as she possibly can. Her story and contributions to the arts are rich and needed. With help from all of us, we can help Rosemary to thrive again.

This fund drive will continue for the life of Rosemary's needs, so if you cannot afford to contribute today, please consider this fund in your future giving.
