Dear Friends and Family of Rob and April (Gokee) Burl,
Rob and April are two that are always giving helping hand and have a difficult time asking for help. At this time they very much need our help!
On 2/2/19 Rob woke up in excruciating pain and unable to move his legs or wiggle his toes. He was rushed to Memorial Hospital and then subsequently transferred to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI.
He was found to have a disc herniation between 3-4th lumbar and narrowing of the spinal canal that resulted in paralysis in his legs. He underwent emergency surgery while fighting a severe infection in his knee due to the emergent risks with his spinal cord. Unfortunately, he has yet to regain feeling in his legs.
He is currently at Mary Free Bed in Sparrow for rehabilitation. He is receiving physical therapy and occupational therapy for 3+hrs a day in order to try to get him as well as they can before they send him home.
He still has no feeling in his feet and cannot walk. They have no idea if that feeling will come back so at this point it is just waiting and hoping that time will heal more of his body. Right now they are focusing on strengthening his upper body since he will be relying more on that than anything. He is a pro at using the wheelchair already, and he is learning to transfer himself from bed to chair and back. They are slowly trying to get him standing again.
They are needing modifications at the house so he is able to come home, such as a ramp, safety bars, bathroom modifications, doors, to name a few things. In addition to medical equipment for his care. The household and medical bills are adding up quickly!
