To all of the family, friends and running community we wanted to create an opportunity to celebrate the memory of Richie Martinez. At the time of his passing on on December 8th, 2020 at the age of 57 he had held the official Colorado state high school record in the boys 1600m of 4:10.98 for four decades since he set the record at the 1981 Colorado State 5A High School Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.
In conjunction with the El Paso County Parks Memorial Bench donation program we are fundraising for the required $2500.00 fee for the installation (concrete base and metal bench), the memorial plaque on the bench, and the upkeep from the parks department. The bench will be installed sometime in the summer of 2021 on the Santa Fe Trail between Monument and Palmer Lake, Colorado. It is a trail often used by cyclists, runners and walkers and it is the route Richie also used to to ride his bike from Colorado Springs to Boulder and back.
Throughout the years there have been numerous great runners come from the state of Colorado. Richie's epic high school record has stood the test of time through many attempts to break it in a high school race. It's a testament to the value of his performance. But more so we want people to remember Richie the person, not just what he achieved during his high school, collegiate and professional running career.
Hopefully you will be moved to contribute to the bench and someday go for a run, ride or walk on the Santa Fe Trail and stop at the bench and think of him.
