Hi, my name is Blaine Parsons and I'm the Current Fire Chief of Unity Me. In 2009 we purchased Ladder One from Hamilton Ma, FD, for the amount of $5000.00 us dollars. It served us well for about 10 years.
On July 4th 2019 while responding to a emergency incident, Unity Ladder 1 suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure and lost the Engine. Now due the age of being a 1980 and starting to show surface corrosion it is no longer feasible to put the funding into a 41 year old truck. To replace the motor is upward between twenty and twenty-five thousand US dollars.
This is a vital peice of equipment for our operations. 90 percent of ours roofs are steel roofs and we have people living on third stories of apartments building and we cant reach with ground ladders. And it also provides a safety egress point from multiple story buildings for fire firefighters.
We are a small community with low tax base and the Town of Unity not able to provide funding for a "new to us" Quint Ladder fire truck. We not only provide services for the town of Unity, but we provided ladder truck coverage to the whole north end of Waldo County Maine.
We cover a private college, five Elementary schools, one Middle/High school in our community.
The Unity Maine Fire department Association is looking for help to replace this truck with a certified used Quint Ladder truck.
