WILDFIRES IN PORTUGAL

Since 2010, more than 1.5 million hectares have burned in Portugal, making the country the most affected by wildfires in Europe and the fifth worst in the world in the 21st century*.

OUR PROJECT

Renature projects recover burnt areas by carrying out large-scale reforestation actions in collaboration with local communities. At the moment, Renature reforestation projects are taking place in three regions of Portugal, specifically in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Serra de Monchique and the Leiria National Forest.

WHAT WE ACHIEVED

Bearing in mind that around 98% of Portugal's forest is privately or communally owned, the starting point was to involve the local communities that own and inhabit the land in collaborative models in planning the reforestation of the burnt areas. Through the Renature projects we have already planted 1 million trees and supported around 700 landowners in an intervention area of 3000 hectares. The reforestation work for the Renature projects is carried out by a team of around 50 people who we hire locally, as well all the materials and plants, in order to boost the economy of the regions where we are working.

SPECIES PLANTED

With the aim of changing the landscape with species that are more resilient to fire, we are planting oaks, cork oaks, strawberry trees, chestnut trees, maritime pine and other emblematic species such as the Monchique oak, which occurs only in the Serra de Monchique and the Mira river basin and is Critically Endangered according to the Red List of the Vascular Flora of Mainland Portugal.

To continue the work started in 2019, GEOTA has set itself the goal of planting 2 million more trees by 2027. To do this, we need your donation to ensure that the first 250,000 trees are planted.

Depuis 2010, plus d’1,5 million d’hectares ont été brulé au Portugal, étant le pays le plus touché par les incendies en Europe et le cinquième au monde au siècle XXI, 500 000 hectares brulés et 115 décès.

Dans les projets Renature ont récupère des zones brulées au parc naturel de la Serra da Estrela, Serra de Monchique et dans la Forêt Nationale de Leiria par des actions de reboisement à grande échelle, en collaboration avec les communautés locales.

Jusqu’à présent, on a planté 1 million d’arbres et on soutient près de 700 propriétaires sur une superficie de 3 mille hectares.

Dans le but de changer le paysage avec des espèces plus résistantes au feu, on est en train de planter des chênes, des chêne-liège, des arbousiers, des châtaigniers, des pins maritimes, et d’autres espèces emblématiques comme les chênes-de-Monchique, qu’on peut voir seulement sur la Serra de Monchique et sur le bassin du fleuve Mira (cette espèce en particulier est classé comme ‘en danger critique’, selon la Liste Rouge de la Flore Vasculaire du Portugal Continentale.

Pour poursuivre les travaux entamés en 2019, GEOTA s’est fixé pour l’objectif de planter 2 millions d’arbres supplémentaires jusqu’à 2027.

Os incêndios

Desde 2010 já arderam mais de 1,5 milhões de hectares em Portugal, colocando o país como o mais afetado por incêndios na Europa e o 5° a nível mundial no século XXI*.

Os projetos Renature

Nos projetos Renature recuperamos áreas ardidas através da realização de ações de reflorestação de grande escala em colaboração com as comunidades locais. Neste momento os projetos de reflorestação Renature estão a decorrer em três regiões de Portugal, mais especificamente no Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela, Serra de Monchique e na Mata Nacional de Leiria.

O que já alcançámos

Tendo em conta que em Portugal cerca de 98% da floresta é privada ou comunitária, o ponto de partida passou por envolver as comunidades locais que detêm e habitam o território em modelos colaborativos com vista à reflorestação das áreas ardidas. Através dos projetos Renature já plantámos 1 milhão de árvores e estamos a apoiar cerca de 700 proprietários numa área de intervenção de 3 mil hectares. O trabalho de reflorestação dos projetos Renature é desenvolvido por uma equipa constituída por cerca de 50 pessoas contratadas localmente bem como todos os materiais e plantas necessários de modo a dinamizar a economia das regiões onde estamos a intervir.

As espécies que estamos a plantar

Com o objectivo de mudar a paisagem com espécies mais resilientes ao fogo estão a ser plantados carvalhos, sobreiros, medronheiros, castanheiros, pinheiro-bravo e outras espécies emblemáticas como o carvalho-de-monchique, que ocorre apenas na Serra de Monchique e na bacia do rio Mira e que se encontra Criticamente em Perigo segundo a Lista Vermelha da Flora Vascular de Portugal Continental.
