After discussing with my sister, we have decided it was finally time to bite the bullet and ask for help for my parents. Not for the kids in their care, but specifically for Mitch and Mel.
If you know my parents, they don’t ask for help, but they are always willing to give it. For nearly 10 years, they have dedicated their lives to being foster and adoptive parents and for over 25 years, have dedicated their lives to their many church communities.
In 2016, my parents decided to dedicate their lives to their passion – helping children in the United States foster system. Both quit their jobs and moved to Florida with their girls and worked for a group home in South Miami (this was after they took the position and were meant to be located near Jacksonville, FL.) After an abrupt closing of the home, they had to scramble to find jobs, housing in a tough market, and on top of it, welcomed two more into our family that have anchored them to Miami for the time being. It was a lot and is still a lot. They currently provide care and housing for 5 young adults and children and 1 with serious medical needs, who is currently on State benefits, only (Medicaid.)
Our mom was hospitalized early this morning (01/28) due to unbearable pain in her chest. While they are not sure exactly the cause just yet, they believe it has something to do with her gallbladder. While she is doing okay, she still remains in the hospital and is missing work causing more stress. We are hoping that with the help of their community, we can help cover hospital bills that are looming, and also allow them to take a breath as they figure out the next year.
Please reach out to Kallie or me directly if you have more questions or would like to donate in other ways. We are so grateful to have benefitted from the friendships our parents have cultivated over the past years and the examples they have been to us throughout our lives. It is rate for our parents to ask for help in circumstances like this, so we are asking you for them.
