Raising funds for Luang Prabang (Laos) children
Donation protected
Prior to travelling to Laos two years ago, approval was given to enable myself, my son Luka, and my friend Martyn to spend time with children in the (government controlled) Luang Prabang Orphanage School. Conversational English language, activities and simply spending time with these children - had quite an impact on all of us.
For just AUD$290 we were also able to cover the cost of a nutritious lunch for 450 children - approximately 65 cents per child. A bowl of fish and vegetable soup, cooked in huge pots on open fires, at just 65 cents per serve. This meal was clearly a favourite for the children.
Andrew Brown is an ex-Melburnian, who lives in Luang Prabang and is heavily involved in the co-ordination and sponsorship side of the Luang Prabang Orphange school (for 450 children aged 6-19 years old), and Nursery (currently 20 children aged between 10 months old and 5 years old), and a key player in the "Support Lao Children" movement. We met him in November 2018.
Andrew: " I first moved to Luang Prabang in 2007 to build my hotel. The Luang Prabang Orphanage was my first humanitarian project in Laos and on my initial visits in 2008, I saw 390 children with nothing more than two meals per day of vegetable soup, no clean water and terrible living conditions. I was deeply moved to see these beautiful children in such poor conditions. I placed a small information plaque in the hotel reception which helped raise enough funds to support a basic food program of bread and milk for two breakfasts per week. Over time, I have met many kind hearted people who helped me transform the conditions at the orphanage".
COVID-19 has had a massive negative impact on financial support for the orphanage and nursery projects. Without International travellers, fundraising opportunities have been almost non-existent. Andrew and others had only started the Nursery a few months before COVID hit.
It will take a bit of time before things return to "normal" in Luang Prabang. Here's how you can help:
- every $290 raised will cover the cost of a truly nutritious lunch of fish, vegetables and milk for 450 children. I would like to cover at least two of these lunches before Christmas/New Year.
-every AUD$240 raised, will cover all costs for a child who is in the care of nursery staff for a month. Let's try to cover the cost for one child across at least two months.
I would dearly love to be able to raise at least $1100 to help Andrew and the team to do this....and hopefully it won't be too long before further fundraising and sponsorship can pick up again.
If you/your family/a group are interested in sponsoring a Nursery child in an ongoing way, or at times through the year (AUD$240 per month), please contact me.
**The mortality rate for childbirth is as high as 20% in remote areas of Laos. With no doctors or midwives, complications often lead to the death of the child, the mother or both. Children we are supporting have lost either both, or one parent. They are referred from very poor communities**
