Eva's Medical Fund

Don protégé
Our sister, Eva, has always been the caregiver.  She's the oldest girl and had the responsibility for taking care of the rest of us.  She's always done an excellent job and has been our second mother, sister and best friend.

We've always been a tight knit family that drives each other crazy but is still full of love and caring.  Eva, has always been the most generous of us and always gives to others whether they're in need or not.  For this she has a tremendous amount of family, friends and people that care about her.

In November 2011 she was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called Thymoma, which is cancer of the Thymus Gland.  When she was diagnosed, it was the worst news of her and our lives.  In January 2012 she had a Thymectomy and during the surgery the doctors saw that it had metastasized in her chest and her cancer was now classified as a stage IV b Thymoma.  At the same time, she was also diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Myasthenia Gravis.  This disease attacks her muscles.   After this surgery, due to a paralyzed diaphragm, she was then told she would need to be on oxygen for the rest of her life.

In a matter of 3 months, everything had changed for Eva.  The saddest part is that her worst fear was telling her Husband, Mom, Dad, Sisters, Brother, family and close friends.  As you can imagine since 2011 – my parents have been devastated.  No parent ever wants to see their child sick and worse, not able to do anything about it.

So what did we all do? We cried and cried some more and worried and worried some more. Then we decided that we needed to fight back and we have been since 2011.

Things were going as well as could be expected until one of her routine cat scans in 2014 showed that her tumors had doubled in size and she would need to start a 6 month chemotherapy treatment with the strongest combo available.  It was the hardest 6 months of Eva’s life thus far.  She lost all of her hair and suffered through the extreme side effects that each drug had to offer.  When she finished it was a relief and her tumors even shrunk by 50%!

Sadly, it’s been a year since chemo and the tumors have grown back to their previous size and have started to invade her organs.  In order to continue the fight she agreed to start radiation treatment in New York City (over 2 hours from her house).   What they also found while she was being treated is that her immune system and blood counts are lower than any cancer patients should be.

And still, she never complains. She always worries how we're doing or says "It is what it is. It'll be fine."

A little ways into radiation she had to have multiple blood transfusions and on June 17th she was admitted to the ICU because she developed a fever and couldn’t breathe on her own.  She’s been in there since and the doctors aren’t sure what is the cause or how to help her.  For now, she's on a ventilator which is doing most of the breathing for her.  :(

She’s fighting every day and is surrounded by family and friends. But in order for her to have constant care her husband had to leave work without pay.  As a result, they need help. They need financial help with their bills for medical and home.

Eva, and we, are very prideful people and hate to ask but this is the time. She needs the help and for once we need to push our pride aside.  Thank you for your time and donations to help our amazing, beautiful, caring and loving sister.

In truth, we don’t know what to do without her and are lost at the moment.
