Nanaimo midwife needs some help!

For 40 years, Sandy Pullin has dedicated her life to caring for women, babies and families across Alberta and British Columbia. She was a pioneer of midwifery in Edmonton in the 1980's and became one of the first registered midwives in British Columbia in 1998.  In 2011, Sandy bought the "big blue midwife house" on Stewart Avenue in Nanaimo and it became not only a place for prenatal appointments but also a place where many babies were born in the downstairs birthing suite. This house not only held joyful memories for families and their babies, but it was also meant to be Sandy's financial retirement plan. 

In 2018, Sandy got ready to start her retirement. In true Sandy fashion, she started volunteer work in places like Uganda and Haiti, bringing highy skilled, woman centred care to women in developing countries. Unfortunately as she was putting these plans in place and preparing to sell the big blue midwife house to fund her retirement, it was discovered that there was an old underground oil tank that had been leaching oil into the surrounding soil under the house. The sale of the house was thrown into disarray and it became clear that expensive soil remediation would be necessary. The projected cost is $250,000 and the job is not finished yet. Costs could climb higher. 

Obviously this has taken an extreme toll on Sandy and her husband Robert, who had looked forward to finally spending time together after Sandy's many, many years on call as a midwife.
