Fundraiser to Protect Salem County from Industrial Waste

What’s the Issue?
Giordanos wants to build a massive “recycling” facility along the Salem River on Tilbury Road in our rural county. This facility would process smelly organic waste, like slaughterhouse scraps, manure, and spoiled food. About 150 garbage trucks would drive through our local roads every day, bringing waste from up to 200 miles away. This project could harm our environment, lower home values, and make our communities less pleasant to live in.
Why It’s a Problem:
• Environmental Risks: The facility could pollute the Salem River, groundwater, local drinking water, and create bad odors, affecting our quality of life.
• Property Values: Homes near the truck routes or the facility’s “smell zone” could lose significant value (projected up to 20% loss of value), making them worth less.
• Community Impact: Every town in our county would be affected. Other towns with similar facilities saw damaged roads, higher taxes, and struggling local economies due to lower property values.
• Wrong Location: This kind of facility belongs in an industrial park with proper roads and systems, not in our scenic, rural area. The company chose this spot because the land is cheap, it has access to barges and railways, and they think our local government won’t fight back effectively.
Our Plan to Stop It:
We’re working hard to block this project, called the Giordano proposal. Here’s what we’re doing:
• Petition: We’re collecting signatures to urge the Salem County Commissioners to vote NO on the facility.
• Raising Awareness: We’re informing the public about the project’s risks and impacts.
• Letter-Writing Campaign: We’re encouraging residents to write to the Commissioners and share their concerns.
• Legal Action: We’ve hired a lawyer to strengthen our fight, but legal fees are expensive—around $20,000.
How You Can Help: We need donations to cover the legal costs. Contributing to this fund is a one-time expense that could prevent decades of problems for our county. Your support can help protect our river, homes, drinking water, and way of life. Every dollar counts!
