Project Hope- Helping Barry
Don protégé
It's obviously been a very tough year for many people.
My wife picked up a relative at the airport late last night (12/23) and was coming home at ~midnight when she ran into a man frantically waving his hands on the side of the road- my wife stopped. The man, (Barry) had just gotten off work- his car has been having problems but he hasn't had the money to fix it properly. He thought/hoped he only needed a jump start.
They tried to jump-start the car, but no luck. After, my wife watched Barry lay his head on his steering wheel and he began to sob. He explained how hard of a year it has been- he moved from the East coast to Arizona this past year to help his brother but unfortunately lost his job earlier this year and was now working at a Chipoltle to help pay his bills but is traveling 75 minutes each way to get to his job with a car that is falling apart. He didn't ask my wife for anything and apologized for crying but said he was almost at his end and couldn't take another setback.
My wife got Barry an uber home last night and I met him earlier today (his brother drove him back). I met Barry at his car, talked for a while to get to know him (and his brother) and called AAA (my old employer) to pickup Barry's vehicle and bring it to a shop in Mesa AZ. We also put together a couple wrapped Christmas gifts and gave Barry $100 to defray the cost of the repair.
We'd like to get enough money together to get Barry's car properly fixed, get him registration money for his car, and get him a fresh start. He's a hard working, caring, guy that happens to down on his luck due to a series of unfortunate events. He's off until Monday but needs his car to get to work.
My wife and I will be throwing in additional support but would love to get the community together to help provide a step up, some hope, and some faith that there are people out there that care.
I know there are many stories like Barry's out there - it's easy to "walk-on-by" because there are so many but that's where we're wrong. Let's fix it one person at a time. It's Barry's time.
Thank you for your support, God bless, and Merry Christmas everyone!
