Hi everyone. This is the weirdest thing to create, but after the past few weeks that my family has experienced, we will try anything. Many of you know, our dad is very ill right now and sick in Greece. People have asked how they can help, so here we are.
Our dad, Tom Vachliotis, developed COVID while in Greece a few months ago. Even being vaccinated, he fell very ill. One test after another in a public hospital, lead to the chilling discovery that he has been diagnosed with stage four cancer that has spread to his bones, thyroid, lungs, stomach, prostrate and pancreas. He also been diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome. We almost lost him this past weekend from a perforated bowel and infection. His body is shutting down, and we don’t have much time with him. I don’t think people ever feel they have had enough time with their loved ones when the end comes, but when it happens so fast, and they are on the other side of the world, we felt helpless, devastated, and sickened.
Sarah flew to Greece once we knew he was sick and has been by his side. When we almost lost him this past weekend, we (Alex & Kyle) and (Andrew & Crystal & Aleasia) urgently flew to be by his side, unaware how much time or if we were going to make it to say goodbye. Now, we are here in Greece and the thought of leaving Greece and not being able to be near our father throughout this palliative fight is painful for us all.
In this present moment the doctors are not giving up and we are asking for support to have him flown home to Canada with the care that he needs around the clock. He is unable to sit up and needs constant care, so he will require a stretcher service on a flight. He also doesn’t have insurance to cover the cost of what is an astronomical amount to get him home.
This is where we are today- coming to family and friends to ask for help to raise the funds to bring our dad home to Canada, to be surrounded by his family during this unthinkable time. His prognosis is very poor, and he doesn’t have much more time. It could be weeks or months, but whatever time we have with him will be a gift. But the thought of leaving him alone in Greece, without family or friends to pass away alone is devasting for us.
If you know my dad, he is the most loving and giving man who would do anything for anyone. We can’t imagine life without him, but right now, we just want him home in Canada so we can surround him with love and family.
Any amount will help us get the care to bring him home.
Thank you from my whole family for any help you can offer.
Sarah, Andrew and Alex
