We’ve thought long and hard about where to start and what to write, but the truth is how can anyone possibly sit and explain everything a loved one has gone through over several months, without having outbursts of tears throughout? But we gave it a try, so here we go...
The past few days, weeks and months have been, how do we even say it? Challenging, painful, loving, terrifying and profound. Our beloved, amazing, strong, kind and all round one of a kind father and husband is Fighting for his life every single day. Our hero, terminally ill. We as a family are completely torn. Here’s when it all started…
November 2017, a month and year we’ll never forget. Our 17 and half stone dad became very poorly. 17 and a half stone, remember those words. Unfortunately, this led to the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and finding out 4 days before Christmas was extremely difficult. Aggressive Cancer were the words we were told. Aggressive Cancer. The words that anyone would dread to hear. However, the bad news did not stop there, we were told there was only a 5% chance of it being surgically removed. Not 50%. not 20%. Just 5%. The tumour was wrapped around his main artery, making it impossible to operate. As you can imagine, hearing something like this turned his and all our families lives upside down. Our dad is only 3 weeks over 50. He is an amazing father of four children and an even better grandfather, (bampy as they would call him) to 4 very beautiful children, who think the world of their bampy. After our dad’s diagnosis he started treatment straightaway, we were told if there was any chance for our dad, surgeons needed the tumour to shrink first, this meant he had 100% Chemotherapy ongoing for 4 months. However, even though this was one of the strongest strengths he could possibly have, we received more bad news. The treatment didn't shrink the tumour. But, it did stop the cancer from getting any more aggressive. Due to the cancer not spreading, he was able to have stronger treatment, radiotherapy. It is very uncommon for a person with cancer as such as our dads to receive this type of treatment due to the severity of the cancer, it is not often treated. Doctors previously believed our dad wouldn’t make it past chemotherapy. Doctors were left shocked. BUT, our family were filled with hope. Our dad beat all odds and underwent radiotherapy every day for 5 weeks. We begged, prayed, cried and tried to be as positive as we possibly can, hoping the treatment would shrink the tumour which could then be surgically removed. They were the longest 5 weeks of our lives. Our father’s consultant and doctors tried their absolute best to do everything they could for our dad, as they believed (and still do) he's got a chance at beating Pancreatic Cancer.
5 weeks finally came and went and what felt like the 20th dreaded scan, was on the horizon. The news we received ripped apart everything we hoped and prayed for. Our mum and dad entered the consultants room, to hear the words ‘we’re sorry’. You instantly know that’s not good news. The tumour still hasn’t shrunk. There’s now 0% chance of operating. This didn’t mean it was the end though and therefore this is why we’re here now, telling you guys why we need your help to raise money towards treatment for our dad. He has been given an opportunity to receive Nanoknife treatment. This sort of treatment involves using electrical currents to damage and destroy the cancer cells. The only problem we have is that this treatment is only available on the NHS in England. We have however applied for the funding from NHS Wales, where the treatment will be carried out in Manchester, but this is looking very unlikely. We have no time to wait around, the only option we have next is to privately fund the treatment and travel to London. Nanoknife costs is in the thousands. But, this treatment will basically give him; Extra Time.
If all goes well, our dad will get extra time to make memories with his devoted wife and bestfriend of 25 years. He will get extra time to cherish every moment he can with his children. Extra time to proudly watch the milestones his grandchildren reach. Extra time to see his 4th grandchild turn one. And most of all, Extra Time to walk his daughters down the aisle and watch his only son, his two eyes, qualify in electrics and become an inspiring business man they’ve always dreamed of.
So, from the bottom of our hearts, will you please help us, help our dad, get extra time?
Our father is a genuine great man who is loved and cherished by many who doesn’t deserve this. He has a heart of gold, who would do anything and also gave everything he possibly could to our family. Without him, we would be empty. Lost. We wonder how we will cope? We as his family also need this extra time, to show him just how special he is to us and to thank him for everything he’s ever done.
Originally our dads path in life was to grow old with his wife with a dream that would see them travel the world together, but as his treatments went on we sat and listened on a daily basis to our father detail the side effects from chemotherapy, his exhaustion, nausea, weightloss, heartache, breakdowns and worry. This for us hit home hard. That 17 and a half stone man I told you to remember? 7 months on he is now 14 stone. The weight is dropping fast. It has come to the realisation for him and us, that we dont actually know how long we have together. Whether its tomorrow, next week, next year or 5 years down the line. Our father’s future is unknown, he has to live his life every day not knowing, which is a positivity killer itself.
A father child bond is one that remains sacred for a lifetime and when we have to witness not just our father but our rock and best friend fight for his life with power, strength and courage, that bond is tightened like never before. So, from the bottom of our heart, we ask, will you please help us?
Help us give back to our dad, help us give him a little bit of positivity knowing he will have extra time, help our dad receive this treatment. Help us have extra time as a family.
Please, please help us!
Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this. Anything would help and we appreciate everything, even if it’s just sharing this page and sharing our dads story and progress.
Lots of Love,
The wife, children & partners and grandchildren of William.
