Our Elder Brother: Help Fund an Autonomous Wixárika Community School

Hello, my name is Carlos Carrillo Lopez, and I am the director of Tamaatsi Páritsika, an autonomous high school in Nueva Colonia, in the sierras of northern Jalisco, Mexico. Tamaatsi Páritsika means “our elder brother” in the Wixárika (Huichol) language.

Since opening in 2009, we have supported 13 generations of students. Today, we serve 49 young people between the ages of 14-20, with a team of 5 teachers. Our school was built by the hands of the community itself, made from adobe in a circular form inspired by hikuri (peyote), a sacred plant in our cosmovision, with classrooms arranged around a central courtyard that resembles a flower.

Unlike generalized, state-based education, we have developed our own autonomous, place-based curriculum that revitalizes connection to our roots, traditions, and ancestral knowledge systems. Students learn Spanish and written and spoken Wixárika, alongside agroforestry, growing food, building, traditional embroidery, and jewellery-making. Some of what students grow and make is sold, funnelled back into sustaining the school.

Our aim is to educate Wixárika youth through a relevant and contextualized education, allows them to develop within their own community, strengthening cultural, social, and economic resilience while supporting the sustainable development of their territory.

Why We Are Fundraising

In the past, the school received funding from Rotary Guadalajara and the Wixárika Research Center, however, the initial funding that allowed us to build and sustain the school has now run dry with several essential infrastructural elements that need urgent attention, including installing windows and flooring, and building systems for rainwater collection and solar energy so the school can become fully self-sufficient and off-grid.

Why This Matters

Unlike most schools in Mexico, Tamaatsi Páritsika operates under a principle of financial autonomy. It does not receive budget allocations or direct funding from federal or state governments for its daily operations.

The survival of the school has been made possible through the commitment of the community, reflecting a shared understanding that education is a responsibility of the whole community, not only the State.

The goal of the school is not only academic training, but the development of young individuals who are committed to sustaining their culture and their community. There is a strong sense of reciprocity among students, with any graduates, including those who have pursued higher education, returning to or remain connected with the community to serve it. This ensures continuity in community leadership and keeps knowledge rooted in place.

The Wixárika are one of Mexico’s Indigenous communities, with a population of around 60,000. Like many Indigenous communities, we face the pressures of migration and industrialization, with our traditions at risk of erosion. This school represents a way of strengthening those traditions from within the community itself; a way of investing in our youth to carry on and maintain pride for our traditions for generations to come.

Despite financial limitations and lack of official resources, the quality and commitment of the educational model have produced strong results, with the preparation students receive allowing them to overcome barriers and go on to higher education. A significant number of graduates have gone on to pursue university degrees outside the community, demonstrating that this autonomous model is both rigorous and effective.

Nuestro Hermano Mayor: Apoya al Bachillerato Comunitario Wixárika Tamaatsi Páritsika

Hola, mi nombre es Carlos Carrillo López, y soy el director de Tamaatsi Páritsika, una preparatoria autónoma en Nueva Colonia, en la sierra del norte de Jalisco, México. Tamaatsi Páritsika significa "nuestro hermano mayor" en lengua Wixárika (Huichol).

Desde que abrimos en 2009, hemos acompañado a 13 generaciones de estudiantes. Hoy atendemos a 49 jóvenes de entre 14 y 20 años, con un equipo de 5 maestros. Nuestra escuela fue construida por las manos de la propia comunidad, con adobe y en forma circular inspirada en el hikuri (peyote), planta sagrada de nuestra cosmovisión, con salones dispuestos alrededor de un patio central que semeja una flor.

A diferencia de la educación generalizada del Estado, hemos desarrollado nuestro propio plan de estudios autónomo y situado, que revitaliza la conexión con nuestras raíces, tradiciones y sistemas de conocimiento ancestral. Los estudiantes aprenden español y Wixárika escrito y hablado, además de agroforestería, producción de alimentos, construcción, bordado tradicional y elaboración de joyería. Parte de lo que los estudiantes producen y elaboran se vende, y esos recursos regresan al sostenimiento de la escuela.

Nuestro objetivo es educar a la juventud Wixárika a través de una educación relevante y contextualizada, que les permita desarrollarse dentro de su propia comunidad, fortaleciendo la resiliencia cultural, social y económica, y apoyando el desarrollo sostenible de su territorio.

Por qué estamos recaudando fondos

En el pasado, la escuela recibió financiamiento de Rotary Guadalajara y del Centro de Investigación Wixárika; sin embargo, ese apoyo inicial que nos permitió construir y sostener la escuela se ha agotado. Existen varios elementos de infraestructura esenciales que requieren atención urgente: instalar ventanas y pisos, y construir sistemas de captación de agua de lluvia y energía solar para que la escuela pueda volverse completamente autosuficiente y desconectada de la red.

Para continuar ofreciendo un espacio de aprendizaje seguro y funcional, y para avanzar hacia una mayor autonomía, necesitamos urgentemente apoyo para infraestructura básica:

Por qué esto importa

A diferencia de la mayoría de las escuelas en México, Tamaatsi Páritsika opera bajo un principio de autonomía financiera. No recibe asignaciones presupuestales ni financiamiento directo de los gobiernos federal o estatal para sus operaciones cotidianas.

La supervivencia de la escuela ha sido posible gracias al compromiso de la comunidad, reflejo de una comprensión compartida de que la educación es una responsabilidad de toda la comunidad, no solo del Estado.

El objetivo de la escuela no es únicamente la formación académica, sino el desarrollo de personas jóvenes comprometidas con sostener su cultura y su comunidad. Existe un fuerte sentido de reciprocidad entre los estudiantes: los egresados, incluidos quienes han cursado estudios superiores, regresan o permanecen vinculados con la comunidad para servirla. Esto asegura la continuidad del liderazgo comunitario y mantiene el conocimiento arraigado en el territorio.

Los Wixáritari son una de las comunidades indígenas de México, con una población de alrededor de 60,000 personas. Como muchas comunidades indígenas, enfrentamos las presiones de la migración y la industrialización, con nuestras tradiciones en riesgo de erosionarse. Esta escuela representa una forma de fortalecer esas tradiciones desde dentro de la propia comunidad; una apuesta por nuestra juventud para que lleve y mantenga con orgullo nuestras tradiciones por generaciones.

A pesar de las limitaciones económicas y la falta de recursos oficiales, la calidad y el compromiso del modelo educativo han dado resultados sólidos: la formación que reciben los estudiantes les permite superar barreras y continuar hacia la educación superior. Un número significativo de egresados ha cursado estudios universitarios fuera de la comunidad, lo que demuestra que este modelo autónomo es tanto riguroso como efectivo.
