An American fugitive wanted nearly two decades ago for an alleged marijuana grow-op in Bancroft was arrested June 2020.
There were drugs, there were firearms and there was also over 2 dozen pit bulls seized from the home.
The charges were issued, and the accused was handed over to the CBSA.
But what about the dogs? They are not forgotten, we made sure of it.
The dogs who were hidden in the forest, heavily staked to the ground, some with dilapidated wooden boxes, some without. Dogs with injuries left untreated, dogs who have never received veterinary care, dogs with heavy chains that weighed more than some of the dogs themselves attached to their collars. Dogs who for years knew nothing but life on that chain, living outside in Ontario’s harsh below freezing winters and sweltering summer heat without being able to cool themselves. These dogs spent years isolated in that wooded area with out human touch, without kindness shown to them, with out their basics needs being met, without anything that resembles an adequate life for a dog.
The Ministry asked our rescues help in this case because they knew we would be fair, compassionate and sensible with the fate of some of the dogs and more importantly to the case- we would not turn it into a media frenzy case about the dogs. This in turn meant, the dogs would spend as little time as possible in protective custody which we all agreed would be best for their mental state.
So here we are - tackling 23 dogs “AS IS “, This means we needed to secure temporary housing for the dogs while they under go further assessments before going to foster homes, we are responsible for the vetting, the kennel fees, the training expenses and then flight expenses out to the partnering rescue groups / individuals assisting in this case. We are not a wealthy rescue; we do not have extra funding at our disposal, but we do have the bully community and that is sometimes all you need. Every little bit helps. No amount is too small and if we all rally together, we can help the NOT FORGOTTEN 23
