Nicola&Naithy - Wedding Charity Fundraiser for Sonne

Dear family and friends,

Myanmar holds a special place for us, and what is happening in this beautiful country since February 2021, has personally affected us immensely and continues to ache our hearts. Hence, while your presence and wishes are truly valuable to us and more than enough for us, we wanted to dedicate any funds that you would still wish to allocate towards our wedding gift to a cause that's close to both our hearts.

Sonne International (https://www.sonne-international.org/en/) is an Austrian development aid organisation. In Myanmar, Sonne runs 4 centres for non-formal education (NFE) in the slums of eastern Yangon, daily attendance is ~160 children - street children or child labourers aged 6 - 12 who previously did not visit any school at all (also because of lack of any documentation, they literally don’t exist in the records). Another ~120 children visit Sonne’s free tuition classes daily, ~30 young women participate in Sonne’s sewing classes, and ~40 participate in Sonne’s basic computer training. A total of 15 dedicated teachers and social workers take care of them.

Through its Emergency Fund (to which your donation will go), the organisation is able to help directly and effectively, without any bureaucracy involved – the Fund’s beneficiaries are the communities in the slums of Yangon, children in orphanages, and since the coup also people living in the IDP (refugee) camps north of Yangon, where Sonne regularly sets up mobile health camps - which provide the people with access to free quality healthcare and medicine - especially for children, pregnant women and young mothers, disabled and elderly people. Sonne also take care of hospitalization and provides medical equipment such as wheel chairs etc. when needed. Lastly, the emergency fund is also used to provide shelter for families who have lost everything, who’s houses were destroyed in “clearance operations”, bombings and arson attacks - currently there’s over 2 million refugees within Myanmar - and only through the support of generous, caring people who donate to the emergency fund, Sonne is able to help at least some of them!

Why we also chose Sonne as a beneficiary is because our dear friend Jochen, who we know personally from our time in Myanmar, is based in Yangon and heads the Sonne Myanmar operations. He inspires us all with his optimism, dedication and firm commitment to the organisation as well as the people of Myanmar. In short, he is someone we trust to make the best use of these funds and direct them where most needed. We will not be accepting any other gifts at all, and look forward to celebrating our special day with you.

Il Myanmar occupa un posto speciale per noi, e ciò che sta accadendo in questo bellissimo paese dal febbraio 2021 ci ha colpito immensamente a livello personale e continua a toccarci.

Anche se la tua presenza e i tuoi pensieri sono più che sufficienti per noi, abbiamo voluto raccogliere tutti i fondi che ognuno di voi vorrebbe destinare al nostro regalo di nozze a una causa che è vicina a entrambi i nostri cuori.

In Myanmar, Sonne gestisce principalmente 4 centri di educazione non formale nelle baraccopoli di Est Yangon, dove la frequenza giornaliera è di circa 160 bambini – bambini di strada o bambini lavoratori di età compresa tra 6 e 12 anni che in precedenza non frequentavano alcuna scuola (anche perché per mancanza di documentazione, letteralmente non esistono per il sistema formale).

Circa altri 120 bambini frequentano quotidianamente le lezioni gratuite di Sonne, ~30 giovani donne partecipano ai corsi di cucito e ~40 partecipano alla formazione informatica di base. Un totale di 15 insegnanti e assistenti sociali dedicati si prendono cura di loro.

Attraverso questo fondo (al quale andrà la tua donazione), l'organizzazione è in grado di aiutare in modo diretto ed efficace, senza alcuna burocrazia coinvolta.

I beneficiari del Fondo saranno:

• Le comunità delle baraccopoli di Yangon

• I bambini negli orfanotrofi

• Persone che si sono trovate a vivere, dopo il colpo di stato, in campi per sfollati a nord di Yangon, dove Sonne allestisce regolarmente presidi sanitari mobili - che forniscono alle persone accesso gratuito a assistenza sanitaria e medicine - soprattutto per bambini, donne incinte e giovani madri, disabili e anziani. Sonne si occupa anche del ricovero ospedaliero e fornisce attrezzature mediche come sedie a rotelle e altro materiale medico.

• Le donazioni verranno anche utilizzate per aiutare a dare rifugio alle famiglie che hanno perso tutto, le cui case sono state distrutte durante “operazioni di sgombero”, bombardamenti e incendi dolosi.

Attualmente ci sono oltre 2 milioni di profughi in Myanmar – e solo grazie al sostegno di persone generose Sonne è in grado di aiutare almeno alcuni di loro!

Conosciamo Sonne da tanti anni, e la abbiamo scelta anche perché un nostro caro amico, Jochen, vive e lavora a Yangon e dirige le operazioni di Sonne Myanmar. Ci ispira con il suo ottimismo, dedizione e impegno nei confronti dell'organizzazione e della popolazione del Myanmar.

In breve, è una persona di cui ci fidiamo per utilizzare al meglio questi fondi e indirizzarli dove più necessario.

Non accetteremo nessun altro regalo e non vediamo l'ora di festeggiare con voi il nostro giorno speciale!
