Hi there,
My name is Nadia Dezorzi and have finally decided it's time to ask for help. For those of you who know me, know this is something I struggle with but needed to be done. You also know I am a happy flight attendant, I love my career with a passion. I never thought I would find something that inspires me and this accident has caused me to not be able to live my dream, and given me tremendous financial trouble and physical pain I never thought I’d ever experience at a young age.
First of all thanks for coming along my journey and you just simply reading this means a lot to me.
I was in an unfortunate car accident in Mexico, on January 24th 2022. I fractured two bones on my right ankle sitting in the back middle seat. The driver was inconsiderate and speeding in a curve, we hit a tree. This vehicle is meant to sit 8 people. I was squished in the middle because to my right there were 2 passengers sitting next to me (1 who didn't want to sit in the 3rd row with a couple), and to my left a passenger sitting correctly.
I had urgent surgery in Mexico, a country I do not live in nor have family. I spent 2 days in the hospital waiting for the car insurance to approve the surgery. I spent the night alone waiting for the surgery in the morning. My close friend who I invited along to vacation with me did not show up or answer my phone until the last day I was released from the hospital. This caused me emotional distress and PPD, the emotional pain can sometimes be worse than my physical pain. This is the main reason why I deleted my Instagram account for such a long time. I was depressed and felt humiliated. I didn’t want to admit what was happening to me. The other people were not close friends, so it didn’t affect me, but I really wish my friend of 5 years would’ve been there for me instead of partying with strangers she just met. I constantly saw Instagram stories and posts while I waited for a surgeon to be brought from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.
After the 6 hour surgery, with local anesthesia, I heard absolutely everything. It was brutal and the worst day of my life. It was like hearing someone drilling, hammering, but inside you, your bones. I felt so alone, scared of what could happen.
I have 2 titanium plates and 9 screws in my right ankle now. They are there permanently.
(***UPDATE: new surgery on august 25th because the surgery in Mexico was incorrectly performed and causing me excruciating pain 6 months later. All the hardware will be removed by Dr.Hodgkins. I attached video proof, at least one of the screws is hitting my bone and cartilage, and I have loose bone particles that is causing pain.)
Back to my experience in Mexico: I was released the day after my surgery and “fit to travel” back home to Miami. I barely made it, vomited all the way back in flight. When I landed, I stopped by the restroom with the handicap assistant who was pushing my wheelchair. I passed out due to the pain and woke up in the hospital. I don’t remember much. Luckily she was there to call an ambulance. I was admitted to Jackson Memorial West Hospital and released 4 days later. I am still waiting for this ER bill to be sent to me along with the ambulance bill. (I received part of it today 9-7-22)
Since then I've been recovering and on UNPAID medical leave from work, struggling with medical and living expenses. I go to physical therapy three times a week which costs over $1,920 a month. Add rent, food, gas, utilities…. I receive no goverment help, I applied and applied and appealed and all was denied because apparently my taxes of LAST year show I made over the poverty line and I’m a resident so I don’t qualified like most citizens. No food stamps, no Medicare or Medicaid.
I had my appointment with my new surgeon Dr.Fongue on 04-04-22 who took new x-rays and stated I needed to be switched from twice to three times weekly physical therapy.
I have attached some bills I received as proof.
Thank you to anyone who has already helped and donated all my medical supplies I needed at home, I’m amazed for those of you who barely knowing me or meeting me a few times had the heart and decency to send me things I needed such as portable toilet, shower head extender, shower boot, food, lysol wipes, room decor, and much much more.
Thank you to anyone who can donate or share!
Hugs,
Nadia Dezorzi
