The Mansfield High School Gulf Coast Relief Group is heading back for our sixth trip to the Louisiana/Mississippi region during April vacation to continue restoration and community service efforts that began in 2008 after Hurricane Katrina. The group consists of sixteen sophomores, juniors and seniors and three chaperones: Mrs. Deborah Fournier, Mrs. Theresa Nyhan and Mrs. Tuula Laskorski.
The group will be staying at Camp Restore south of the city of New Orleans. The students have paid for their own round trip air transportation and will spend their April vacation working in communities around New Orleans. The group will be raising money to cover their meals and lodging as well as the rental of three minivans to take them to and from the work sites. On our first five trips we worked on projects such as:
-Construction projects, painting and priming damaged homes
-Demolition and clean up of public and private areas
-Volunteering at a horse rescue ranch for abused and abandoned animals
-Soup kitchen support
-Clean up of National Cemetery and Park regions
-Clean up of the shoreline and replanting of dune grasses
-Upkeep of the camps that house volunteers
-Habitat for Humanity construction and debris clean up
The Gulf Coast is slowly recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina which occurred ten years ago. Many of the abandoned properties are being cleaned up and returned to a more natural state. You can still drive through the neighborhoods and see many empty lots with stairs that lead to nowhere.
While on these trips the students develop a sense of unity. When our students leave their comfort zone to help others it builds character. Gulf Coast members from previous years have commented that the week is over and you feel that there is so much more you could do for the people there. We hope to give students an experience that launches them forward into future volunteer projects both local and far from home.
The following students are members of this year's Gulf Coast Group:
Emily Sullivan
Amalia Todesco
Maddy Gemme
Jen McCabe
Taylor Samuels
Shannon Knight
Allie McHugh
