An Overflow of Beautiful Sound - A romantic organ from 1884 coming to new life.

The German church in Stockholm possess a historic organ which recently woke up, after 44 years in the slumber of hibernation. The instrument was built in Romantic style in 1884 by Sweden’s P. L. Åkerman, but was superseded by a neo-baroque organ in 1972 when Romantic instruments had fallen out of favor. Nonetheless an attentive expert in historic monuments recognized the older instrument’s high quality and arranged for it to be carefully stored in a vault in Stockholm’s old town.
The parish has approved plans to restore and rebuild the Åkerman organ, and to sell the 1970’s organ. By doing so, it will regain its Romantic instrument with its strong character, which distinguishes itself through its supple, symphonic sound. Additionally, the organ’s Classical facade, which clearly references the altar and several other of the church’s refined details, will regain its place and bring back the architectural unity of the room.
But equally important, music lovers, organ enthusiasts and tourists will be able to experience a unique instrument in the greater Stockholm area, the only from the second half of the 19th century, showing typical Swedish organ tradition of its time with tonal and technical solutions inspired from German, French and English organ builders.
The German St. Gertrud’s Church is located in the heart of Stockholm´s Old Town (Gamla stan), and a place for delightful music, manifold spirituality, as well as a popular destination for a large number of visitors every year.
