A Brother’s Story

Growing up with a sister with disabilities was a sometimes difficult and sometimes endearing thing to go through as a young child.  In this time period, the term “short bus” was used as a negative term to make fun of those who were physically or mentally challenged and as we know kids at this age sometimes make fun of people who are different.

As I got older, I began to better understand my sister and became very protective of her around those individuals who may stare or laugh.  As I continued to grow and understand, I began to see that the world was changing and people with disabilities began to be accepted: we entered into the world of pop culture in a positive light whether it was in the movies, television, YouTube videos or on a box of Wheaties.

Below you will find information about a wonderful museum established in 1998 by James M. Boles, EdD located in Buffalo, New York and dedicated to advancing the understanding, acceptance and independence of people with disabilities.  The Museum and its future plans discussed below are especially important to the families with young children who can learn about the disabled community and its history at a young age.

Please support our cause.  Thank you.

A Brother’s story for his Sister.  Love You.

The Museum of disABILITY History is the only museum of its kind in the United States. The Museum of disABILITY History is dedicated to the collection and preservation of artifacts relating to the history of people with disabilities. The Museum’s exhibits and educational programs create awareness and a platform for dialogue and discovery. Exhibits include: Pop Culture, Sports and Disability and Evolution of Adaptive Equipment, among others. Kids and adults can sit in the Invacar, a three-wheeled car.

Located at 3826 Main Street in Buffalo, New York, the Museum of disABILITY History’s mission is to tell the story of the lives, triumphs and struggles of people with disabilities as well as society’s reactions.
