Miss Mighton’s Race for the Sensory Space

Don protégé
Hello, my name is Sarah (Miss Mighton) and I am a teacher at Bo’ness Public Primary School. I am fundraising to create a sensory space in one of our school rooms to help support our wonderful pupils.

We all have moments when we feel dysregulated – maybe we’re anxious, upset, too warm, or just overwhelmed – and when that happens, it can be really hard to focus and learn. For some of our children, especially those with autism, ADHD, or additional support needs, sensory dysregulation is a daily challenge that can seriously impact their ability to engage at school.

Imagine trying to concentrate while loud building work is happening outside, or trying to work with an itch you just can’t scratch. That’s what it can feel like for these children – every day. Sensory regulation activities help “turn down the noise” and bring comfort, making it easier for them to focus, feel safe, and thrive.

That’s why I want to transform one of our rooms into a calming, sensory-friendly space — with things like:
• A water tray
• Fidget toys
• Weighted blankets
• Textured mats
• Soothing lighting
• A comfy, quiet space

This wouldn’t just be for children with diagnosed needs – it would be a space for any child who needs a moment to calm or wake up their body so they’re ready to learn. ✏️

‍♀️ The Challenge

To raise funds, I set out to complete the 3 Peaks Challenge — climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales within 24 hours. My training was going great until I injured the cartilage in my left knee during my final training hike. This meant that I had to make the difficult decision to put the challenge on hold.

Now, after weeks of rehab (thankfully my past career as a physio came in handy!), I’m ready to take it on again — with a twist.

On 20th June, I’ll be walking for 14 hours straight on a treadmill at Grangemouth Sports Complex gym — the time I originally set for completing the mountain hikes. To support my knee and avoid needing a helicopter rescue from a mountaintop (), I’ll alternate between:
• A standard treadmill, and
• An antigravity treadmill, which supports some of my body weight to reduce strain on my knee

How You Can Help

If you’re able to donate — even just a little — it would mean the world to me and to the children at Bo’ness Public School. Every penny brings us closer to giving them the safe, sensory-friendly space they deserve.

Thank you so much for your support!
