100km in 24 hrs for Dorset mind, our mental health support in Dorset!! But this is also now for someone else too.......
When I saw this tiktok video about this local young lady Emily Mcdonald I cried!!
Abruptly an illness struck Emily 18 months ago, at the age of 16. Complex Regional Pain syndrome attacked a normally very happy healthy child and has left her with constant, sometimes excruciating pain, losing the use of her right leg & left arm, unable to walk or do many normal things unaided.
Please have a watch of this tik tok video where her older sister explains a little more about their journey
I went to speak with Emily & Andrea (aka mum ) and though what they have been thru has been nothing less than awful. Not only having to deal with the shock of this rare illness, and how it stopped a young girl's life in her tracks, but also the discrimination & unkindness, she has faced in school, not from children, but teachers, peers, while facing pain each day just to get thru her GCSEs. In the end, she smashed through nothing more than grit & determination!! So to those who made life more difficult than it needed to be for her!! She proved u wrong!
Emily faces intense pain every day, and that has her in tears, she needs help & support with everything!
However, her positivity, determination, outlook for the future & mindset is so so very inspiring!!
In tears daily just for her mum to do a few mins of physio each day, but she won't refuse to do it. She asks for the car to be parked away from the house so each time she tries to get further without a wheelchair. She attends The Swanage First School for a couple of hrs each wk no matter what the pain, to help the children, as they bring her joy. She is a stubborn, determined and beautiful young lady with an infectious smile and mindset ❤️
Just being able to walk without constant pain is something we all take for granted. And this felt like the right challenge for me to do to raise funds for Emily & her family so they can continue to provide services for Emily to help with her recovery & mindset, which in turn may support the reprogramming of the neurological pathways in her brain that could possibly turn this syndrome around.
So I have stupidly ( and now I've put it out there I have to frickin do it ) signed myself up for 100km in 24hrs, no sleep, continuous walking. Yes I can lift weights, yes I eat well, but I underestimated this challenge!!
I've completed 3 training walks now taking me to 50km in 10 hrs & my god I've never felt so old & uncomfortable, with my legs, knees, feet, back & hips. I literally get back and can't move so getting to 100km seems unachievable at this time, I won't lie!!
The nauseous u face from going from day to night. The pain that I've felt from just 50km. But I'm going to give it my all. With a great mental health charity in mind and this inspirational teenager who has her whole life ahead of her.
So after I have raised the £200 for Dorset Mind, I would like every penny after this to go to this very deserving teenager, and her family to use to ease the financial constraints that may occur for many reasons & keep Emily moving forward ❤️
So whether u would like to see me in pain, or want to get behind me, raise what I can, and go as far as I can for Emily & Dorset Mind. Dip into yr wallet and support us both
