Medical Funds for Thao

Hello,

My name is Shawna Verges. I've created this fundraiser in honor of my best friend of 20 years who was recently diagnosed with category 4 papillary carcinoma (thyroid cancer).

Those of you who have met Thao know what an incredible person she is. Always the life of the party, strong, independent, passionate, loyal, confident, resilient, determined. Thao gives 100% in every endeavor she takes on: handmade Halloween costumes for her daughter Madeline, Girl Scout Cookie Mom role, PTO fundraising, birthday gifts, event planning, the list goes on.

Life has handed her more than her share of obstacles but she continues to overcome them, coming out stronger than before. Now, she is faced with the biggest obstacle yet: beating cancer. She has a heck of a support system; let's take this opportunity to show her just how strong it is.

In addition to medical bills, Thao will be out of work with no pay for several weeks during and after her upcoming surgery. She is the first one to help others but the last one to ask for help herself. Anything you can contribute to support her during this journey is appreciated. Here is Thao's story in her words:

"About 4 months ago, I joined a CrossFit Gym because I was finally in a place that I could dedicate some time to working out and losing weight, also to make friends cause I'm new here.

About 2 months ago, I stopped being able to finish workouts. I've been super lethargic and nauseous and no...I'm not preggo.

My CF coach referred me to a wonderful functional medicine doctor and I found a wonderful primary care physician who both helped me troubleshoot my issues to find out why I was not losing weight and feeling the way I do. I took blood tests and a hair strand test which led me to an ultrasound and a biopsy. Turns out I have category 4 papillary carcinoma aka thyroid cancer. I will have to have surgery in the next couple weeks to remove my thyroid and the 2.2cm nodule that is attached to it.

I cannot tell you how crazy the last week has been for me but I can tell you there is a plan, I have an amazing support system and a positive outlook on what's ahead of me. Those I have told in private prior to this have been incredibly supportive and I am grateful.

With everything going on in the world, please take the time to listen to your body and follow what you feel is right for YOU.

Also highly recommend taking this hair strand test because who knew I was intolerant to CHICKEN. That my gut health was so bad it wasn't absorbing the vitamins I was taking in. Despite the cancer, I can say I do feel better after some diet changes and have finally lost a couple pounds. Ready to cut this b**** out and get on with my life."
