Medical bills and family support for Joy Jones.

On Saturday, April 8, just before Easter, our mom suffered from a Tonic-Clonic seizure. Thankfully EMT's arrived quickly and thought it was a stroke at the time and rushed her to the New Hanover Medical Regional Center. Her life changed drastically in that moment. When she woke up in PICU, she lost her memory and couldn't identify anyone including her husband or daughters, and lost her ability to do even the simplest of tasks physically. She couldn't feed herself, drink water, or even attempt to walk around.

The good news is that physically our mom has experienced good improvements over the last two weeks thanks to the folks at New Hanover Medical Regional Center. From PT and OT to excellent nursing care and having a sitter with her at all times, she is starting to recover and be able to do basic care tasks and we continue to see her progress each day. She is always on the go and it's a miracle to see her have some physical independence even if it's just being able to feed herself, brush her teeth, and go for a walk around the hospital floor.

However, she still has extreme memory loss, struggles with words, and continues to need constant care to try and work through how to do certain tasks. Her recovery here doesn't have an end date and so her work as a real estate agent for over 30 years, had to be put on hold while we help her prioritize her health - even though she would much rather be helping her customers. We are unsure if she will ever fully recover but we want to do whatever we can to help her move that needle forward.

Those who know our mom know that she's extremely loyal, determined, independent, and will do whatever she can to help others in need. Now, she needs our help more than ever to do what we can to provide her a safe space for recovery and to ensure that we can care for her even as she's unable to earn a living. Her most immediate needs are to help cover living expenses and medical bills. Whatever you are able to give, regardless of size, will make a huge impact in her recovery as we determine her new normal in this incredibly difficult time. Here's how your donations will make a difference:

Living Expenses: Your support will help our mom and 83 year old father cover their mortgage, utilities, and groceries, ensuring stability during this challenging period. Our father is still trying to keep up his part-time job but it's hard to juggle with her care needs.

Medical Bills: Though we are lucky to have access to Medicare to cover our mother's current care, Medicare does not cover all medical needs moving forward as she comes home and needs nursing aid care. Your support will help us in paying for an aide to be with her on days our father needs to work or family is unable to sit with her.

By giving to this cause, you are helping our family know that we are not alone in helping our mom. Our goal is to get her healthy enough to be able to start receiving visitors soon but in the meantime, we are so appreciative of the kind thoughts and powerful prayers sent her way. We hope that through this campaign we can get her the support she needs to continue on her path to recovery to get her back to being the Joy we all know and love.

Thank you!
Gene, Lori, Caroline, and Ariana
