Marie and Rachelle Wright Van Fund
Donativo protegido
I am attempting to raise funds for the purchase of a newer van for Marie and Rachelle Wright; details are enclosed in Marie's attached letter dated March 29 . If you are able to assist financially in any way it would be greatly appreciated.
"I am writing to you in order to seek assistance in acquiring a modified van for myself and my daughter. I have been in a wheelchair for 28 years due to a motor vehicle accident in 1988, resulting in a spinal cord injury and leaving me paralyzed from the waist down. My youngest daughter was in the vehicle with me and acquired a head injury leaving her mentally disabled and in a wheelchair as well. After the accident I was hospitalized for 10 months with my youngest daughter. One week after returning home, my 4 year old daughter was struck by a car. We were back at the hospital, with her on life support for 9 days, and didn’t get back home for another 2 months. By the time we got home and adjusted to all the trauma, I was unable to file a claim for insurance as the year had gone by. This has made finances extremely difficult for us. My husband left two years after my car accident, leaving me to raise 4 children on my own (age 10, 8, 6, and 3 (with an acquired brain injury). I am currently on a fixed income from Canada Pension and have been unable to get ahead financially.
My van is a 2004 Montana with over 350,000km on it. For 13 years my van has been the sole transportation for myself and my 29 year old daughter and her electric power chair. With the daily wear and tear put on the van it has begun to deteriorate and break down regularly. The motor on the power door quit working and has to be operated manually making it impossible to manage with 2 chairs in the van. Extra modifications were/are required in order to accommodate these two wheelchairs and make it accessible, which come at an exceptional added expense. I have been very fortunate this week to find a van through a private sale that has been modified with a power ramp and door, lowered floor with kneel suspension, and wheelchair tie downs. It would still require 6 way powered driver seat and hand controls in order for it to meet my needs. It is a 2011 Toyota Sienna, with 47,000km on it and in excellent shape. He is asking $35,000 for it plus it would need approximately another $6000 for the seat and hand controls. A reliable vehicle would be life changing for myself and my daughter as it would give us the independence to be able to get her out to family functions and community involvement. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your consideration in this matter."
