Update:
Betty has continued the battle for her life. She remains undiagnosed and has continued to undergo experimental treatments that have so far been unsuccessful. She continues to require blood transfusions frequently to keep her alive while she searches for a treatment option. Is is likely she'll move forward with a very risky bone marrow transplant, which will require specialized treatment and 24-hour care by her family. Not very many people know how this type of situation is chronically draining physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially. Yet, she continues... one day at a time with the support of her family.
Please join the continued effort of supporting Betty and her family so that Betty can stop worrying about the financial logistics of her journey and stay focused on her health. If you have other ways of offering support, please let Betty or me know.
Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, love, and support!
Initial Posting:
First, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she won that battle. But the celebration didn’t last very long. Shortly after feeling like she could relax a bit and not have to worry anymore about chemo and surgery, Betty was diagnosed with life-threatening anemia. It took months for doctors to determine it was a malignant (cancerous) problem with her bone marrow. Betty does not produce normal red blood cells. Betty’s condition is so rare that despite seeing multiple specialists in numerous hospitals in two different states, doctors do not have a specific diagnosis for her condition. With no known diagnosis, there is no known treatment. So, for many long months, doctors keep Betty alive by administering blood transfusions every 1-2 weeks. At first, this seemed okay because they were still investigating to find a treatment. But after so many months, doctors, hospitals, periods of waiting, and not being well enough to return to work, there are still no answers. No treatment options. Doctors are now turning to a bone marrow transplant as the only possible treatment option, which is no small matter. Betty may have to relocate for a few months to receive specialized treatment and will require 24-hour care by her family. She has a long uphill battle ahead of her.
Needless to say, this entire process has and will continue to take a physical, emotional, and financial toll on Betty and her devoted husband, son, and daughter. Betty is a strong and independent woman, and she quietly battles and does not complain.
