From Fatima's brother, Alex

As you may know, Fatima my dearest sister, daughter to our father Paul and mother to Talia and family/friend/mentor to many around the world, came to Canada for a visit and to care for our 91 year old father. An opportunity presented itself to Fatima to extend her stay here in Canada and she proceeded with the appropriate arrangements. In very good health at the time Fatima elected to not extend her travel/medical insurance and all was good.

On or about 14 Jan 24 Fatima awoke with a sore throat that persisted for 2-3 days before moving on and extending to her right ear. In the days that followed the ear became increasingly sore and was leaking fluid, at times stained with a tint of blood. Fatima self-medicated during this time with some over the counter meds as recommended by the local pharmacy. Fatima also tested positive for corona during this time.

On Fri 19 Jan 24 Fatima attended a virtual medical appointment with dad's family doctor who advised Fatima to continue as she was, no antibiotics would be recommended or prescribed at this time but if it got worse to call back for an in person visit or if need be a visit to the hospital.

During the evening of Sat 20 Jan 24 and into the early morning the pain in the ear increased and then extended down the neck, into the right arm, across her hips and into the right leg. At this point Fatima was unable to bear the pain, to stand or walk and crawled to the washroom where my father found her laying on the floor. Fatima reached out to me early Sun morning 21 Jan 24 and shortly there-after we rushed the hospital.

Fatima checked in sometime around 730am and around 900am was admitted and expedited into ER. Numerous visits by ER doctors and nurses followed along with extensive tests. Shortly after they confirmed she was fighting both a viral and bacterial infection, they were not sure which strain or bug but put her on immediate general antibiotic until such time that they could confirm which strain and dial in a specific antibiotic which would take 24-48 hrs.

A few hours after being admitted Fatima's blood pressure dropped to 60/39 and a flurry of doctors came to her attention and she was taken from ER general infectious control room to ICU infectious control and numerous drugs were administered. She she had 6 drip lines into her and was on 24 hr watch by a variety of nurses and doctors. Right about this time I thought we were going to lose her. With meds her blood pressure bounced back up where it held around 90/65 for several days. Fatima's right arm swelled up from what would normally be 8-10cm diameter to something like 12-14cm turning red, black and blue and blistering with 2 blisters on either side of her bicep the size of golf balls. Results from various tests continued to come in. Lactate around 9-12 normally less than 2 indicating very high acid in the blood burning thru her internal organs.

Bacteria was confirmed to be Strep A Group A, a very dangerous and infectious bacteria and the appropriate antibiotics were administered to reverse the toxic shock syndrome that was taking place.

Fatima also was found to have developed a blood clot on the right side of her neck in the jugular vein half way between her brain and her heart and was put onto blood thinner to which in the days that followed had to be reduced as she began some bleeding from the mouth. Test results also indicated her liver had swollen significantly and fluid accumulating around her heart and lungs. Pain meds were ineffective at times. Official diagnosis her over-all system was in toxic shock.

Fatima's legs also swelled double their usual size and the scale on the bed would indicate she had put on some 30kg over the days in swelling.

Among other things Fatima's right arm was closely monitored, pulse and blood flow measured at the shoulder, elbow and wrist fearing blood flow would be interrupted with the extent of swelling killing off the extremities of the arm. The hospital staff were also closely monitoring for signs of flesh eating disorder with the arm. Fatima was unable to eat/drink on standby for emergency surgery to the arm for possible biopsy, flesh removal or amputation.

During all of this time Fatima transferred from 1 ICU room to 1 other where she stayed until Sun 28 Jan 24 when moved to a regular, private ward.

The antibiotics have halted the progress of toxic shock before doing too much more damage, although Fatima still has fluid/pneumonia on the lungs and her right arm remains painfully swollen.

At this time Fatima's blood work for the most stabilized, with the exception of her white blood count. Overall swelling has subsided, she is off oxygen, is able to turn herself in bed, feed herself and as of a day or two walk around her room and the hallway. Today, I found her on her feet doing some gentle stretches.

We are unsure when and what discharge will look like and what other underlying conditions may exist, but during this very dark time, Fatima has been graceful, polite and supporting to the wonderful hospital staff, striving to remember each one's name, asking about their lives and training, and thanking them for their service

She has had her head on calmly throughout, logically talking/thinking things through, exercising her greatest resources, her mindfulness, spiritual practices and full on persistence to push through.

What an incredible inspiration to all around her: my amazing sister.

Hospital bills are starting to come in now. We do not know really know what the final amount will be for the hospital stay/treatment or subsequent treatment but do know that these will be significant and this is where we kindly ask for your help to help Fatima along to help her continue what she does best: helping others to master themselves and to fully live the potential of their respective journeys.

If I could use Fatima's words here "with love and respect to all". Alex

From Juliet ... Fatima is now home and recovering. She still has the clot in her neck whilst simultaneously dealing with immigration forms to be able to stay in the country in order to heal before flying anywhere!

The medical bills are rather enormous so any help from you all would be so appreciated. Mahalo from the heart.
❤️
Meanwhile she has lots of painful kinks and bunched up energy around the glutes and hips. Fatima's breathing is easier too.
Thank you all for riding this wave with Fatima ~ she appreciates it more than we will know.
Namaste,
Juliet
