Let's Help Marti McDonald Fight Lymphoma

Donation protected
Hello, Everyone.  Our friend and kindred sister, Marti McDonald, is facing one of the greatest challenges of her life.

On Monday, March 15, 2021, Marti met with an oncologist regarding a large mass in her chest in between her lungs, heart and sternum.  and was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (non-Hodgkin lymphoma), an aggressive and fast growing cancer.   After that appointment, she was sent to the hospital in Vail, CO for an ultrasound which revealed large blood clots in her left neck and shoulder.  Her stress was magnified ten hours later when her father died from complications a type of B Cell Lymphoma.   A PET scan revealed a spot on her adrenal gland which complicates her treatment.   Marti's cancer staging is at least Stage III - a bone marrow biopsy will determine if she has Stage IV lymphoma.

Her extremely active lifestyle has come to a grinding halt after being put on blood thinners and told to stop activity due to several large blood clots.  This is secondary to pressure on a main artery above her heart created by a fist-sized lymphatic mass.

Marti needs financial and emotional support.

Treatment for this type of cancer is aggressive.   Three days after her Father's funeral she stated chemotherapy on Monday,  March 29, 2021 at the Shaw Cancer Center in Edwards, CO.  She will have five days of chemotherapy, two weeks off, then five more days of chemotherapy in that rotation for six to eight weeks.  Marti has a  high deductible shared health and wellness plan but it doesn't cover any medications including chemotherapy.  Her deductible starts over in June.  There is also the possibility that she will need radiation therapy and  other forms of treatment  if the chemotherapy does not prove effective or if it has entered her central nervous system.

Marti has been a healthcare provider in the Roaring Fork Valley since 2000.  Her physical therapy career has included nineteen years as a home healthcare physical therapist for Columbine Home Health.  She has worked at Roaring Fork Physical therapy and currently is employed at Personal Rehabilitation Center  but is taking a leave of absence to fight the lymphoma.    Prior to practicing physical therapy, Marti was a teacher and coach, and she's currently a mountain bike instructor for Roaring Fork Cycling.  Marti is compassionate, caring and a great support to her patients and friends.

As you can imagine, even with health insurance, out-of-pocket medical and living expenses are often a challenge during this type of treatment.  Marti's journey will take at least six months - maybe longer - and she will be unable to work for the duration of her treatment.  The purpose of this Go Fund Me is to make sure that Marti can keep her home and have money to help with living expenses.  No donation is too small.  Let's take away as much of Marti's financial stress as possible.
