Don protégé
For those who know my family and my Dad, Leo (Lixy) , you know that we have had to endure our fair share of trials.
For those who don't know our family, my Dad has been the bread winner of our family his whole life. About 3 years ago his body began to experience changes. We also noticed changes in him. But he continued to work, as a Diesel Mechanic, until he eventually just couldn't do it anymore. That was 18 months ago.
We took him to a government hospital where he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. We were told that there is no treatment for this disease and there is nothing further they can do for him. We were not satisfied with this diagnosis and nor was my Dad. We, his 3 daughters, were not financially able to take him to a private neurologist as he was no longer able to work and were running the home, including paying my baby sister's education.
We had faith that God would make a way. He did. An amazing woman offered to pay for my Dad to see a neurologist that she knows personally. This neurologist confirmed the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and prescribed medication which he said would not improve his condition but would slow down the progression of the disease.
Over the past year my Dad has deteriorated drastically. He is no longer able to walk or talk properly. Due to our financial constraints we were unable to take him back to the neurologist for which a consultation costs approximately R3000. Nor could we take him back to the government hospital. In their opinion there is nothing further that can be done and they do not have the equipment to do any scans... the only 2 brain scan machines in Gauteng are both not working and according to the doctor my mum spoke with, "they will never work"
About a month ago my Dad began experiencing frightening moments where he is unable to move.
My sisters and I put our resources together and made an appointment for him to see another neurologist.
On Monday the 28th of October my Mum took my Dad to the neurologist. He noted the clinical history and did some physical tests and said to my Mum "Alzheimer's cannot do this"
He does not believe that my Dad has Alzheimer's but says he cannot make a positive diagnosis without further tests and an MRI being carried out. The cost of the MRI alone is approximately R20 000 (£ 1050 approximately) . We are at this stage feeling totally overwhelmed.
My Mum, my sisters and I have done all that we possibly can to ensure that my Dad receives the required medical treatment . However, we are unable to do this on our own. We are still providing for our parents and our baby sister and we do it with love, but just don't have the finances to get the required procedures carried out.
So it is with humble hearts of gratitude that we plead with you to help us help our Dad. His whole life he made sacrifices for us, to give us the best. He has always been such a selfless person and it breaks our hearts that we are unable to do this for him.
We understand that the economic pinch is being felt globally, and all contributions will be greatly appreciated.
We also ask that you please uplift him in prayer, as well as my Mum and us, as we trust God to come through for us.
God bless you all!
