Legal Fund for Mommy and Makeda

This fundraiser will help me pay for a private attorney to represent me in my custody and child support case in California.

On January 17, 2023 I flew to California 7-months pregnant to attend a 10-day silent mediation retreat. I was scheduled to return to the east-coast on the 29th of January BUT instead I walked into a Domestic Violence Protective shelter. I sat there for 2 hours crying as I told my story. I cried because I finally got away from a man that was unrelenting and unwilling to let me go for over 2 years. I cried because I was not going to have the dream family life I always wanted. I cried because I was ashamed I stayed in a toxic relationship for years. I cried because I wanted a safe delivery and I wanted my baby to be safe and healthy.

February 2023, I filed for a restraining order for DV and after the baby was born I applied for custody and visitation. 17 months later, I am still in court, and I am struggling as a self-represented litigant in family court. My ex-fiancé is financially well off and has hired multiples lawyers that are aggressive and fighting to win at all costs.

I am asking for your help.

My daughter's name is Makeda. I named her after the Queen of Sheba who was a scholar, traveled to Israel to study under King Solomon and brought Judaism to Ethiopia. She was a respected leader. My wish is Makeda will draw inspiration and lead a fulfilling life committed to learning, exploring, and creating solutions that benefit our communities. I want her to understand and practice compassion, love, and forgiveness. I pray she will learn discernment to pick a healthy partner and create a joyous family life one day.

My ultimate goal is to keep myself and Makeda safe. I need to hire a lawyer because I have no voice in the courtroom to date. My goal is to have a custody and visitation arrangement that is safe and appropriate for my daughter's age. To end the cycle of DV with me.
