Laptop Fundraiser for undocumented student leader

[We're referring to her as 'Maria' to protect her identity]
Maria migrated to the U.S. from Peru with her family when she was about 4-5 years old. She grew up in a low-income community filled with violence and from early on knew of her undocumented status. At a young age, she was not aware of what being undocumented meant, but little by little she became aware of the boundaries that came along with being undocumented. She knew she was limited on the things she could do and came to believe that college would never be an option for her due to her status and family income. Still, she had become extremely passionate about helping others because of experiences she has witnessed and gone through growing up.

What happened to her family:

On Tuesday September 1st at 7:00am in the city of Montebello CA, Maria's father was detained by ICE agents that were waiting for him outside their home. After contacting CHIRLA organizers and LA Raid Rapid Response Network, Maria’s family concluded that the fight to get her father out of detention would cost too much and too long and decided as a family to accept his deportation proceedings.

Because of this, Maria will need to slow her education from full time to part time to find a job to help her family during this pandemic. Maria is an active leader with the California Dream Network, the youth branch of CHIRLA and has participated in leading actions and events that pushed state and federal legislation such as Dream and Promise Act HR6, CA health care for all, Prop 15 schools and community first and many other pro immigrant legislation.

Why does she need a laptop?

Maria has had her laptop for a very long time and just a few months ago it stopped working all together. She is currently using her sister's rented laptop that the city is loaning her family as part of a covid outreach to low income families that can't afford internet or don't have any computer access to do their studies at home. She normally waits for her sister to finish her classes and assignments to use the computer.

With her father being detained, a big chunk of their income that he provided has been taken away. Maria is the oldest of 3 siblings and is taking on a bigger role in her family to provide financially. This means delaying her studies from full time to part time in the fall when she just transferred to UC Davis from her Community College. The goal for this GofundMe is to take one less worry from the list of many she has right now.

Please contribute to help this extraordinary person and her family during this very difficult time!
