Our dear friend and colleague, Dan, was diagnosed with a rare form of abdominal cancer that the doctors have described as insidious, undetectable, rare and aggressive. Fewer than 1,000 Americans are diagnosed with this type of cancer each year. Dan sought medical attention in July 2014 and was diagnosed with a benign cyst; the cancer diagnosis was not until January 2015. Meanwhile, the cancer was growing, coating his organs and freezing their function along the way.

Dan is a devoted husband and father. He is a model Dad who supports his two girls in academics and sports. He tends the school garden with his youngest daughter while they wait for her piano lesson on Fridays. He nervously cheers on his eldest daughter at her gymnastics meets. Dan is an active member of his homeowner’s association, an artist, a kayaker and ultimate Frisbee enthusiast!

Dan is passionate about conserving Hawaii’s native plants and animals. He is a career natural resource manager, with 20 years of dedicated service to some of the rarest species in the world. He is fondly referred to as the “Danimal” by colleagues for his athletic hiking and spiderman-like ability to maneuver into places others cannot. Dan’s commitment and dedication to protecting Hawaii’s natural resources is contagious and irreplaceable! He is a vital part of the Hawaii conservation community.

Please help Dan get the best treatment possible for this rare form of cancer by helping Dan and his family contend with medical treatment costs and travel to seek specialized care. No family should have to face a challenge like this alone.
