My name is Sam Escobia. I am 62 years old and I immigrated from Bohol, which is an island in the Philippines to the United States in 1988 and became a citizen in 1995. I have spent my carrier being a caregiver for the elderly in Milwaukee, WI.
My Son Emmanuel (34) who lives in Manila, Philippines, has been on dialysis for the past two years and is in dire need of a Kidney Transplant. After meeting with my doctor and going thru some tests, they have confirmed that my tissue and blood are a ‘match’. Dialysis is not a solution, it’s a temporary fix. So, I am leaving the first week of June to have the procedure. Over the past two years, Emmanuel had watched two of his cousins die from kidney failure as they couldn’t find a donor and afford the cost of surgery. Unlike the United States, in the Philippines there is little to no Government Healthcare plans, only the wealthy get coverage and or treatment.
Emmanuel has three loving children that need their father, Pia (8), Axe (6) and Tryex (4). As there are medical risks for me, I am willing to accept them so that my son can live. I want him to be able to see his children grow into adults, get married, have children and be blessed like I have been.
The research I’ve gathered from the doctors in the Philippines and the politicians, is the surgery will cost anywhere from $30,000 (Government Subsidized) to $60,000 (Private Market). I feel confident that I will receive the subsidized rate but if not I’m willing to take on the additional debt to save my son. I will also have additional costs for my air fare and post surgery medical bills for myself and son. These costs will be $8,500.
I live a simple life and the money that I’ve saved, I send back home to my family. For example, Emmanuel’s dialysis costs $1,200/month. I ask that if you can make any donation for any amount, I would be so grateful.
