Those who know Alexis and me know that we are passionate about transformational growth in community, and hold an inexpressible desire to see renewal in underdeveloped countries, such as Rwanda.
Our desire is to fulfill a need where every day ‘love’ means bread for the hungry, water for the thirsty and healing for the broken-hearted. It means family for the orphan, freedom for the captive and peace for the war-torn.
For this purpose, on May 20th, we will begin the three-month endeavor of constructing the Kigali Children Center here in Rwanda. This home will provide a safe place for vulnerable children and underprivileged youth who are orphaned and living on the street. Here they will have their basic needs of food and shelter met, as well as receiving counseling, education and vocational training.
Our goal is to see those who have been abandoned in a country with a traumatic history brought into family. It is God’s heart to see these children lifted to maturity in a safe place where they will grow to become self-sustaining adults, empowered to impact others for Jesus and transform generations to come.
To reach this goal we plan to create a nurturing environment for these vulnerable children to:
1. Receive love and physical care
2. Receive support and trauma specific counseling
3. Learn empathy for others
4. Learn responsibility
5. Receive education
6. Receive support and counseling specific for young girls who have become pregnant while living on the street.
In order to build the children’s center, we are raising $15,000 to cover the material needs for renovation of a large, abandoned residence not far from where we live. Personally, we are investing in the deposit as well as all startup fees required by the government.
Funding for immediate renovation will provide for:
1. Removal of rubble and repair of brick masonry façade: $1600
2. New roofing: $4,000
3. Interior finishing: $4,000
a. Paint: $540
b. Windows: $500
c. (8) Doors: $540
d. Flooring tile: $600
4. Electricity: $620
5. Exterior Water Source: $200
6. Exterior Toilets: $2,200
7. Exterior Property Fencing: $700
Building the children’s center will not simply create a typical ‘orphanage’. We see this house as a healing center. Each child in need will find a safe environment with us as we secure a supportive family for him or her to live with and continue to grow in their education and future. Our plan is to maintain positive contact with each child, and any family members they may have, once they have received care from the center.
This investment is more than just a temporary ministry, but a chance to see beauty, growth, and renewal in Rwanda for future generations.
