Dearest Friends!
Beloved long-time high school English teacher Karrie Wilhoit needs our help! In June, Mrs. Wilhoit received a devastating diagnosis of uveal melanoma. This cancer is vicious, especially if it metastasizes to the liver, as Mrs. Wilhoit’s has.
Karrie is a non-smoker and was very healthy until one Sunday afternoon when her vision in one eye suddenly went wonky. She rushed to the ER where they diagnosed a detached retina—a strange finding usually caused by impact or injury. Within a week, an eye specialist told her she had uveal melanoma.
Her first MRI was good news—when uveal melanoma spreads, it usually spreads to the liver. Hers was clear, but she would need follow-up MRIs going forward to make sure it didn’t spread.
3 months later, Mrs. Wilhoit’s second MRI revealed the terrible news. There were 11 spots on her liver. A follow-up MRI a few weeks later illustrated how aggressive her cancer is—there were more spots, and they were bigger.
Mrs. Wilhoit starts treatment only days after Thanksgiving at Houston Methodist Hospital. After researching the various treatment options available, she and her husband Clifford have opted for combined immunotherapies.
Karrie Wilhoit is only 56 years old and a wonderfully devoted mother to her only son Zachary, a UT Longhorn alum. A resident of Austin, Zach has moved back home to support and help his parents. Karrie is an avid reader, a lover of literature, language, and education—and Phil Collins. She has inspired hundreds of students and has prepared them exceedingly well for life after high school.
Karrie will be receiving multiple immunotherapy treatments in Houston over the following months that will cost more than many of us would understand, even with insurance, not to mention travel and housing expenses … and the Wilhoits need our help!
Karrie’s high-school sweetheart and husband of 36 years, Clifford, has been right by his sweetie’s side every step of the way as she’s gone through so much these past couple of months. We hope you will take a moment and consider making a donation to help this wonderful family… No amount is too small and every donation will be deeply appreciated. With your help, we can help this amazing teacher get the medical care she needs, and allow her to spend all of her energy on healing and loving her family. Please help take some of the other added stress off their plate. Spread the word. We do cherish your support and your prayers for Karrie!
