If these were normal times, Gary would be spending his days in his hair salon cutting hair and swapping stories with his clients. At Gary’s, haircuts always included lots of stories and lighthearted ribbing. Also, when the work was done, Gary was always ready to help people including spending many nights helping his friend Gloria in her efforts to raise funds for the Jackie and Friends Fund. But these are not normal times, especially for Gary, who, in the middle of the pandemic, has had to face the challenge of his life.
As across Nova Scotia, Gary’s salon was shut down by the Province because of the pandemic. At the beginning, he, like the rest of us, stayed home and did what he was supposed to do to stay safe while taking care of his elderly father. While we were in isolation waiting for our lives to restart, Gary’s life got a gut punch he could not have foreseen, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. Now, instead of waiting to reopen his salon and trying to recoup some of the income lost during the forced closure, Gary will be travelling to the oncology department of the QEII for radiation and chemotherapy.
There is never a good time for such devastating news but there could not have been a worst time then in the middle of a pandemic. If these were normal times, Gary would be surrounded by family and friends, there to support him at the start of this difficult journey. Because of the pandemic, they cannot drop in to give him a hand and much needed hugs but have to offer their encouragement through texts and phone calls. If these were normal times, the people in the community who love him would be organizing a fundraiser, maybe an afternoon of music at the Legion with lotteries and rapure for sale. Again, at this time, this is impossible. So, we are going to go a different route and try to raise some funds to help Gary through a Go Fund Me Campaign. Please consider contributing because, right now, Gary needs our support.
