*In March of 2017 a genetic test confirmed Joshua has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The cause of Duchenne:
What is Duchenne muscular dystrophy?
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rapidly progressive form of muscular dystrophy that occurs primarily in boys. It is caused by an alteration (mutation) in a gene, called the DMD gene that can be inherited in families in an X-linked recessive fashion, but it often occurs in people from families without a known family history of the condition. Individuals who have DMD have progressive loss of muscle function and weakness, which begins in the lower limbs. The DMD gene is the second largest gene to date, which encodes the muscle protein, dystrophin. Boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy do not make the dystrophin protein in their muscles.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects approximately 1 in 3500 male births worldwide. Over time, children with Duchenne will develop problems walking and breathing, and eventually the muscles that help them breathe and the heart will stop working.
*August of 2018 we learned that Stem Cells harvested from umbilical cords at cesarean birth in Panama provide the needed building blocks to help Joshua's body build the cells needed to gain strength and start walking again. We are working with Dr. White of Healing Place Medical in Chalfont, PA. Right to Try legislation makes it possible to receive the stem cells here in the US instead of traveling to Panama every time for treatment. This treatment needs to be repeated about every 6 months.
*December 10, 2018 Joshua received the first injection of stem cells.
*Early June we will travel to Pennsylvania for the next treatment.
The Stem Cell Institute operated by Dr. Neil Riordan has pioneered the development of stem cells in Panama.
Our need:
The latest developments allow us to triple the amount of stem cells that Joshua can receive each of the next two times by ordering them by May 10th.
Donations will support the purchase of stem cells and travel to and from Pennsylvania. Thanks for all the prayers.
