On Memorial Day, Jon suffered a massive stroke at the age of only 44. He underwent a highly risky brain surgery that day to remove the clots, and against all odds, he survived.
The next week and a half were spent in the ICU where they determined that the stroke affected his brain stem, which means a wide variety of basic body functions may be impacted. Jon is a fighter and has made some good progress with moving his arms, legs, hands, and feet; opening his eyes; and eventually re-learning to breathe on his own. There have undeniably been miracles and blessings, and an outpouring of love and support, but there is still a long road ahead. Jon underwent a surgery yesterday to have a PEG tube placed, which will allow him to receive nourishment directly to his stomach. They are hoping to move him to a rehab facility within the next day or two where, once he is more awake, he will begin the rigorous process of physical therapy and trying to regain his abilities to swallow, communicate, and move on his own.
Jon's wife, Shawna, and their six kids are doing the best they can in this extremely challenging situation. A few days after Jon's stroke, Shawna said that while she would never wish something like this on anyone, she would wish that everybody could experience the way people have come together to offer help and love. In addition to Jon's physical challenges, one of the biggest difficulties they will face in the upcoming months will be finances. Jon is self-employed and will be unable to work for the forseeable future. The huge medical bills, as well as the cost of living for a family of 8, adds up quickly, as you can imagine. Your donations are appreciated more than we can say, as well as any prayers you can offer in their behalf.
Thank you for your generosity, kindness, support, and love!
