Update 8/19: Anna has spent over 54k to date. The good news is that someone donated 19k directly, which brings the total raised to just over 42k. Without pro bono support or funding from any large organizations, Anna has had to pay the balance out of pocket for her legal representation. Unfortunately, she continues to have difficulty securing full-time employment. If you know of any orgs (like the ACLU!) that might support this case- please get in touch.
And thanks for all your donations and words of encouragement.
In solidarity,
Illona
Hello friends, colleagues, and supporters,
I am launching this fundraiser in support of my friend, colleague, and union sister Anna Feder. Anna was instrumental in launching our staff union and has been a tireless supporter of her colleagues over the years as a union steward. She is someone who is always there when there's a need, ready to roll up her sleeves and do whatever she can to help others. I am lucky to know her and happy for the opportunity to support her now in her hour of need.
Anna was terminated after seventeen years at Emerson College last year, and the successful Bright Lights Cinema Series she ran was canceled. Anna’s lawsuit describes how Emerson took these actions because she engaged in constitutionally protected speech. More on the circumstances in her own words here: Anna's Berkeley Beacon Op Ed
Anna has filed a lawsuit against Emerson for her unlawful termination. We hope to support Anna with the legal fees associated with that lawsuit; protecting her right to free speech is also protecting our own. More on Anna's case in The Intercept.
Mutual aid is one way we can all support each other in difficult times.
I understand that this is a challenging time for many people, and there are numerous places where individuals are sharing their resources. If you are able, please consider giving. If you are unable to contribute financially at this time, you can still offer support in other ways—through employment leads, advocacy, or other forms of material, tangible, or emotional assistance. Anna has been unemployed since mid-October, and her benefits will expire in three weeks. I know she would greatly appreciate words of support.
