Jessica's Journey: From Tubes to Vocals
A Dad's Perspective
There are moments in life that divide everything into "before" and "after."
For our family, that moment was watching our daughter Jessica fight for her life.
Jessica was a healthy, vibrant, outgoing 12-year-old girl with a huge personality, a huge circle of friends, and a smile that could light up a room. Then what we thought was flu became something far more serious.
Influenza A developed into sepsis and necrotising pneumonia.
As parents, you tell yourself everything will be okay. You cling to every small piece of good news. You try to stay strong because that's what parents do.
Then reality hits.
Jessica was admitted to PICU and placed into a medically induced coma.
The machines took over where her body could not.
The sounds of monitors became the soundtrack of our lives. Tubes, wires, alarms, ventilators, numbers on screens that suddenly meant everything. Days blurred into nights. Sleep became impossible. Time lost all meaning.
I remember standing beside her bed feeling completely helpless.
As a dad, you're supposed to protect your children. You're supposed to fix things.
But there was nothing to fix.
Nothing to do except stand there, hold her hand, and hope.
Hope that she would wake up.
Hope that she would come home.
Hope that the next conversation with a doctor wouldn't be the one every parent fears.
Jessica spent 15 days in a medically induced coma.
Fifteen days that felt like a lifetime.
The staff at PICU didn't just care for Jessica. They cared for us.
They explained things when we were overwhelmed. They reassured us when we were terrified. They showed compassion when we were exhausted. They gave us hope when hope was difficult to find.
Eventually, the day came when Jessica opened her eyes.
A moment I will never forget.
The journey didn't end there.
Today Jessica is home, back with her family, back at school part-time, laughing with her friends and rebuilding her life. But recovery isn't a straight line. She still faces ongoing health challenges, investigations, scans, breathing difficulties, fatigue, sleep apnoea and the lasting impact of everything she has been through.
Yet she keeps going.
She keeps smiling.
She keeps fighting.
And that's where this fundraiser begins.
Not because our story is unique.
But because it isn't.
Every day families sit beside hospital beds praying for good news. Every day children face battles they never asked for. Every day doctors, nurses and support staff walk into those wards and carry the weight of some of the hardest moments a family can experience.
I can never repay the people who helped save my daughter's life.
But I can try to give something back.
Through this challenge, I want to raise money, raise awareness, and support the people and services that help families like ours when life changes in an instant.
Every donation, every share and every message of support helps.
This isn't just Jessica's story.
It's for every family who has sat beside a hospital bed and prayed for one more day.
From tubes to vocals.
From survival to recovery.
From fear to hope.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
